I want to come to the GTG too- can I come too?

Fodorite018 Jun 14th, 2005 04:20 PM

Sunbum--Of course! Everyone is welcome:) BTW, when we were in Eugene it happened to be the same day as the Prefontaine Classic. Oh my, the traffic...but we made up for it by coming home via 99W through all the winery areas.

thornphoenix Jun 15th, 2005 09:24 AM

Sunbum - tell me more about the Whole Foods going in Eugene (do you know the location and planned timeframe). Basically, the closest thing Eugene has to Whole Foods is the Oasis market (which I love too), but Whole Foods has so much more. Whole Foods has so many things that you can't find in a common supermarket like Safeway. For instance, they have fantastic cheeses to choose from (and you can try them!), some of the best fruit/veggies I've seen, plus their meat/fish counters are really nice. I particularly enjoy their fresh baked goods and their deli (very convenient for a take out lunch/dinner and you can actually still get healthy stuff). Oh, I can't wait!!!

mms, hmmmm, Salbasgeon or Hilton...well Hilton is newer, but I believe the rooms are smaller than the Salbasgeon. Hilton has the better location for the football games, but then again you have to deal with more noise from party-goers (not always a bad thing ;). They both have bars/interior restaurants so similar there. I think if you're looking for space to spread out I'd choose the Salbasgeon, but if you're looking for convenience to the game and a newer facility (and easier access to/from the freeway) I'd pick the Hilton.

When a date is chosen for the GTG please post - that would be great!

Cheers,
Tracey

Thornphoenix- Wholefoods is not a definate in Eugene but has been alluded to in plans of a downtown redevelopment-
I have a heard that the IHOP on Franklin is one of the places being considered- dont know about timelines.
You know the Oasis is gone dont you?
The original Oasis store on Willamette has reopened under former employees- havent been there yet.

thornphoenix Jun 16th, 2005 07:16 AM

Sunbum thanks for the info.

No, I didn't realize the Oasis had closed - bummer!!! To be honest I don't know street names in Eugene very well. I thought I remember Oasis being somewhere near Coburg Rd.

If the Oasis I knew is gone then it makes even more sense to put in a Whole Foods. I've been to that IHOP you describe and it doesn't seem a big enough area for a Whole Foods, but then again I'm not an engineer or contractor so it may be just fine ;). Heck a small Whole Foods is better than no Whole Foods.

Thanks again Sunbum!

Cheers,
Tracey

Tracey, on your next visit to Portland, try Hot Lips Pizza. There's one in the Pearl District (NE 9th/Irving), one on Hawthorne (SE 23rd/Hawthorne), and one downtown at Portland State University (on 6th). Hot Lips supports local farmers and food suppliers and uses organic ingredients.

I also like a place just off NW 23rd called Tribute's (between 23rd and 22nd on Kearny) - pizza and cheese steaks. And at SE 20th and Hawthorne, Vincente's - a non-smoking bar that serves good pizza in a nice atmosphere (nicer than your typical pizza joint but rowdy like a bar).

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your post. I've had many a slice of Hot Lips Pizza and LOVE it too. About 7 years ago I was taking some weekend intensive classes at PSU and we would go to Hot Lips for lunch - they received a lot of my business during that year. :)

Vincente's sounds right up our alley and a place to put on our must-try list. Thanks for the tips!

Now I want some pizza and it's only 9:45am!

Cheers,
Tracey

Corvallis has a new stadium??? Where is it? I am a former Beaver, but haven't been back in a long while!

I do like Whole foods, but Portlanders are lucky enough to have an even better choice- New Seasons Markets. I would KILL to get one in Honolulu. the freshest produce, great deli/take out selections, 21 varieties of balsamic vinegar (yeah, we were so impressed we counted!).

So...I'll be in Portland Sept 6 -10. Will you be there then Scarlett? I would really love to meet all of you P.O. Posters.

thornphoenix- thanks for the great report. It is good to hear that Em Suites is a nice alternate for 5th Ave, especially since I think we've done too good of a job promoting it, and it sells out quite often!`

Scarlett Jun 16th, 2005 11:49 AM

lcuy
We are moving to Portland the first week in August, so yes, I will be there in September , big big grin :D

BTilke Jun 16th, 2005 12:13 PM

I used to shop at Nature's (Fresh Northwest) in OR and WA. I heard they were bought out by Whole Foods and the Nature employees weren't happy with the new management style.

I remember Oasis! The one on Willamette. I can't picture the old IHOP lot being big enough to hold a Whole Foods. Is the L & L Food Market still in business at 16th and Willamette? The little coffee stand inside was our morning latte pit stop. One night we walked by and saw a lost porcupine snuffling around the bushes.

sunbum1944 Jun 16th, 2005 12:27 PM

There is still a restaurant/coffe shop in the L&L building but under new ownership so totally remodeled - and a
different name. The back half of the building is a restaurant/bar in the evening - stays open until 2 AM I think and is quite nice -kind of upscale for
Eugene - big fireplace - art on the walls- fancy drinks. The new owners are hoping to make it the "after theatre" place to go.

thornphoenix Jun 16th, 2005 12:33 PM

Hi lcuy,

Well, not really a totally new stadium at OSU, but they did tear down one whole side of Reser Stadium (the side that the students sat on) and have re-built it - it's very nice and has a lot more seating on that side plus boxseats.

I've never been to New Season's Market - where are they located? I have been to Wild Oats, which use to be called something else (are the current Wild Oats what use to be Natures?).

Cheers,
Tracey

Fodorite018 Jun 16th, 2005 01:07 PM

Tracey--Thanks for the comparison between the two hotels. I am betting we will stick with the Salbasgeon since we know we like it.

Lucy--A former Beaver, huh? I knew I liked you:D

beachbum Jun 16th, 2005 01:46 PM

I think it was Wild Oats that bought Natures, BTilke. Natures now plays third fiddle to New Seasons and Whole Foods. I like Whole Foods the best, but New Seasons has more locations so is more convenient... at least temporarily.

Presocia Jun 16th, 2005 07:39 PM

thornphoenix: Thanks for taking the time to post a report about your weekend!

Does anyone else posting here remember when the Lloyd Center was the original outdoor shopping center? It was revamped and made into an indoor mall sometime during the early 1990s I believe.

ed Jun 16th, 2005 07:45 PM

The Lloyd Center was originally a golf course.

The Lloyd center was built in the late 40's or early 50's

Scarlett Jun 16th, 2005 07:57 PM

The Yankee and I had some good Indian take out from Whole Foods this past week (Orlando) .. I am looking forward to being close to one again.
We have been online apt hunting tonight, the Pearl is getting to be more and more tempting.
They have a Doggie Day Care Center in the Pearl! ((&))

PamSF Jun 16th, 2005 09:49 PM

Oh Scarlett~wait til you see that Whole Foods in the Pearl! It beats any one I've been to.

Fodorite018 Jun 17th, 2005 06:32 AM

Presocia--Yes! I remember going ice skating there as a child. We also used to go to the Organ Grinder afterwards. Things sure do change.

beachbum Jun 17th, 2005 07:09 AM

The Organ Grinder! Now there's a place I hadn't thought about in a long while. We used to go to the original Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor after skating.

I still remember being awestruck the first time I saw Lloyd Center, Presocia. That was back in the mid-60's. What was the name of the candy store on one end of the bridge going over the rink?
