Portland/Seattle/San Juan Islands

Thinking about flying into Seattle, renting car, driving to Portland for two nights, driving back to Seattle for two nights, then doing three nights in San Juan Islands. Is this too much??? Could add an extra day to trip. SWA is having a sale for the next three days, so quick replies would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think it's necessarily 'too much' but it is a lot of moving around. If you just did Seattle and the islands would make a less hectic trip.

That said Seattle to Portland is pretty much a 3-hour drive straight south on I-5 freeway. Once you're back in Seattle you can get to the San Juans by car and ferry. Or you might want to look into Kenmore Air (floatplanes), which is of course quicker.

Adding to suze's comments, I would ask, why Portland?

We did this trip last year, but flew into Portland, then took Amtrak to Seattle, picked up a car and spent a few days on the San Juan Islands, it was a very pleasant trip and we really enjoyed the Northwest.

I also was going to suggest flying into Portland and out of Seattle (or the other way around) but it sounds like the airfare sale is a Seattle round-trip?

You could change it up entirely. In 7 days you could do Portland, the Willamette Valley and the wineries, and have time for a trip out to the Oregon coast. But then I'd want to fly in/out Portland.

For flying in/out Seattle, like I mentioned first, I'd just do Seattle and the San Juans.
