Portland Restaurants
Making a visit to Portland for the first time, from the east coast. Staying in Portland for 4 nights. Anyone have any good recommendations for restaurants. Wife and I both enjoy Italian and Mexican food. Just the two of us. We don't especially care for chain restaurants. Thanks in advance, Larry0070

Mexican isn't a favorite of mine, though I do enjoy Esparza's (really tex-mex). Maybe you'll get some suggestions from others.
But Italian... Portland has a number of good choices. Personal downtown favorites are Fratelli's and Cafe Mingo, in the Pearl District and on NW 21st, respectively. My citywide fave is Alba Osteria & Enoteca, noted for dishes of the Piedmont area of Italy, and located a few miles SW of downtown. The local institution is Genoa, which has been around forever, and considered by many as the best. Then there's Pazzo's and Giorgio's, and another hole-in-the-wall fave of mine, Cafe Allora. Almost forgot to mention Mama Mia's Trattoria, which is fairly new, and getting rave reviews. For down-home style, I like Piazza Italia, where you'll be greeted in italian by the owner and enjoy the banter of the waitstaff. Give me another minute; I'm sure I can come up with a bunch more! And none of these are chains.

I like Cafe Mingo (the one in NW), Genoa, and Sub Rosa (on SW 26th & Clinton)
For Mexican- Esparza's for a hearty Mexican lunch. Nuestra Cocina would be my for dinner- Its a different type of mexican, which I can't recall at the moment!

Our Mexican recomendations are:
Taqueria Nueve - a great place for sitdown modern styled Mexican food on NE 28th
Our absolute favorite is Oba in the Pearl...More Cuban/Latin American food than just Mexican.
Mazatlan Taqueria downtown is pretty good for a true taqueria type place and a quick burrito or taco...
Esparza's doesn't do much for our tastes - but we shy away from TexMex...
