PORTLAND OREGON - Pearl or Alberta?

Me and my husband (24 & 25) are spending a night in Portland Oregon at the start of June as part of our road trip and I am trying to figure out a neighbourhood to spend the night in.

We love different/unique places, independent retailers, young 'hipster' style buildings/bars/stores, a place with good character. Much like Camden in London for those who have been.

I have heard both the Pearl district and Alberta in the north east are two neighbourhoods kind of like this. Was wondering your thoughts?

I love the look of the 'Caravan' hotel where you stay in teeny houses but it is fully booked.

Alberta fits your description the best:) It has really been up and coming the last 5-8 years. SOOOO different from when I worked in that area 25 years ago;) You might also want to check out the SE Hawthorne area for unique and funky stores/etc.

For unique lodging in the Portland area, check out McMenamin's Edgefield (in Troutdale). http://www.mcmenamins.com/edgefield/location
Is the plan to arrive late in the day and check in and to shop in Portland in the morning?
Where are you coming in from and where are you going after Portland?

You also might check out the Ace Hotel or the Inn at Northrup Station- not really the Pearl but the Inn at Northrup Station is kind of funky- easy walk to many shops and restaurants - and parking included .

If your plan is to shop upscale shops, I would say the Pearl. Otherwise, Alberta, If you go to the Alberta Arts District, the best place to eat is the Tin Shed. However, plan to wait for a table because it's so popular.
