Portland Oregon, Mallory Hotel
Any feedback on the Hotel? Anyone ever stay there?
|
Hi doc!
We were just in Portland, although we stayed at the 5th Ave Suites, I can say that the Mallory looks great from the outside and is in a great location. Very close to shopping, the theatres and concert hall/PCAP. From their site, it does look pretty nice inside too~ Have you been to Portland before? Wow, what a great place , we loved it :D |
I have a brother in Portland and we will be the godparents of his 2nd child. Great city but I have never spent much time time at night. Looking forward to a taste of nightlife there.
|
The Mallory has been around forever as a classic, old style place with middle market appeal. It does have a welcoming feel about it, and the restaurant, though not gourmet, is popular amongst many locals.
To add to what Scarlett wrote, the Mallory is also very near the MAX line, so, without a car, you can easily get to most places you'd want to go. |
We saw the Portland Taiko Drummers, a ballet at the Shirtzer Hall and a few movies..there are quite a few nice places in the Pearl , 750ml was nice for sitting outside on a warm evening and having a drink. NW23rd street is good for small cafes and places to have a drink..
there are so many good restaurants too! They were having free concerts in the big Square (Pioneer?) at night..there always seemed to be something going on. Congratulations on the baby, Godfather :) |
They made me an offer I couldn't refuse;-)

Hi doc! I haven't stayed at the Mallory, but it looks really classy from the outside. We love Portland. When we had an extended stay on the coast this summer we visited many times.
Check out the views of the city from the Portland City Grill. My son had dinner there after he proposed to his girlfriend on a carriage ride through Portland. He raved about the steak and lobster there and the doting treatment they were given. I enjoyed the Bluehour for their potato gnocchi with black truffles and the upscale atmosphere. We also enjoyed Paley's Place, we had a meal out on their front porch so we could see our sleeping DD in the car. Wildwood is right across the street, I've heard excellent things about it also. Take a walk along the waterfront in the evening, it's gorgeous. If you get hungry in that area, we enjoy The Harborside for fresh fish and really yummy eats! Congrats, what a special honor! ***kim*** (~~) |
Question about the Max line. Is that the public transit from the airport to town? Which stop would Mallory be at?
Thanks again. How about suggestions on Micro brew pubs? |
Take the Max red line and get off at PGE Park. For more info on the Max system, go to www.trimet.org.
|
doc, where are you coming from? All over the PNW you will find tons of microbrews on tap, doesn't even need to be a brewery!
We like the Red Star for beers and of course there is a Rock Bottom Brewery. MacTarnahans is the popular local brewery: http://www.macsbeer.com/place.html |
Coming from Boston. Judging by the Red Sox in the playoffs last night, I will need to drown myself in beer to relieve the misery.
|
Yes, MAX will get you from the airport to town. It runs right by the Mallory, but doesn't stop there, unfortunately. You'd need to get off at the PGE Park stop, then backtrack a couple blocks to the Mallory.
I'm more into wine, but I think you'd like Henry's Tavern on 12th and Burnside. It's recently opened in the original Henry Weinhart's brewery location. I think they've got 100 beers on tap, many of them probably local stuff. Otherwise, check out http://www.nwbrewpage.com/orbpubs.html. |
Do you drink wine? There are lots of cool wine bars in Portland, also! ***kim** :)
|
Wilamette Valley produces some of my favorite wines, but are difficult to get on the east coast. So to answer your question Kim, Yes.
|
You'll be able to sample your favorite PNW wines at 750 ML, Tabla, Noble Rot and the Wine Down in Portland to name a few. You also may want to check out clarklewis, a fairly new place in Portland that has been getting rave reviews.
Has anyone been there lately and care to comment on your experience? :) ***kim*** (~~) |
I second the recommendation for the Red Star at 6th Ave and Adler, in the5th Ave Suites building. Great atmosphere and good wine! (I am a sucker for Pinot Noir) One night, it was a very good thing that we only had to walk to the hotel after dinner ((D))
Bluehour has a nice bar if you want to have a drink but not get involved with the eating scene. The Heathman Hotel has an excellent bar that serves great "bites" and excellent Willamette wines. Be sure to pronounce it Will. AM. ette. sounds like dammit. :) The Heathman is very close to the Mallory. The Max LightRail is so great! We took the streetcar, the little trolley and the Max everywhere..if you are there over a weekend, go to the Saturday Market, if you are old enough, you will be transported back to the 70's and you will have to struggle not to buy a cool tie dye shirt, man :D |
Whoops, Spelled it wrong. My brother went to law school at Willamette University. You would think I'd get it right.
Still got a few tie dyes from grateful dead shows. Nothin' left to do but SMILE SMILE SMILE. |
The Saturday Market is lots of fun. Here's their website: www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com
I don't know how the rose gardens are now, but they sure were gorgeous this summer. I think we must have gone there over half a dozen times over the summer. You may want to check out Sauvie Island, which is a cool place with beautiful farmland. They're having the pumpkin patch now. In the summer months the fields are filled with gorgeous pick-yourself flowers. ***kim*** (~~) |
