Portland, Oregon gets SNOW! Pictures.

We don't get much snow in Portland - maybe once a year at most, and even then, it often doesn't stick around long. A snow storm is a big deal here.

Check out my pictures:

Looks like it will warm up by tomorrow so this snow may be gone soon, too. In the meantime, the roads are supposed to freeze overnight - fun!

Yes, wasn't it an interesting day?! We had just over 6 inches SW of town. Looked like a postcard, and of course the kids were in heaven with sledding!

I walked several miles in the snow (with my camera gear). I waited for a bus several times but it never came, so I just kept walking. I fell only once which I consider lucky (slightly sprained my wrist, no damage to the camera stuff).

I didn't get cold even though I was outside so long. It wasn't windy and it's been so cold lately that today felt good by comparison.

I saw people out running and biking, too! Quite amusing. People never stop biking in Portland, apparently.

These were very nice photos. The reflection of the bridge in the water was excellent. The deer statue in the park seemed like a great shot for a Christmas card.

Great photos, Andrew! You really got around for such bad road conditions.

My daughter said classes at L& C were cancelled, but they're quite high. Didn't realize the whole city had REAL snow!

My MIL flies home to PDX tomorrow night. Guess we'd better check the flight before heading to the airport.

Hi Andrew, great pics. I visited Portland last summer for the first time, I loved that city. I live in Austin where we could go years without snow, but we got some yesterday. Not as much as you, but it's nice while it lasts.

Lucy--Yeah...this snow shut down pretty much everything yesterday. Schools from north of Vancouver all the way down to Albany were closed, and many are still closed today. Definitely not our usual weather

Great photos as always Andrew!
We were out yesterday with pup, in the Pearl and the Park Blocks.
I also had my camera, and got a photo of a guy on his bike lol. I was doing well to walk in spots, cannot imagine staying upright on a bike.
Things are pretty quiet here today.
lcuy, I hope/think, that when MIL arrives, the roads will be good, I know they are not too bad in her neighborhood.

I really wanted to get over to the Pearl to shoot there but it just wasn't in the cards. Wanted instead to shoot down at Riverplace and see the new aerial tram at OHSU doing its test runs with the snowy backdrop. My friend has already been on this thing (not yesterday!) and says it is really cool. Anyway, just not enough time or energy to shoot everything in a day! Maybe I'll wander over there today to see if there's any snow left...

Nice shots, Andrew. I heard they were letting people ride the tram for free yesterday; maybe they're doing it again today. Might as well; they'll never recover the cost of that thing. ;-)

Hope we get some more snow tonight!

Andrew:

I was born and raised in Portland, I now live in San Francisco, and as a photographer myself I appreciate your photo's. How were you able to post your photo's and have them copywrited?

I didn't make it to the Pearl today, either - instead, I shot some more pics in my own part of town. They are mostly neighborhood pics, just ordinary "streets and houses covered with snow" snapshots, but if anyone wants to see what Portland neighborhoods look like in the snow, see these other shoots here (first two shoots listed):

Thanks for sharing the photos, they are lovely! The tram ride sounds like it would be a lot of fun, something we will try next time we're in Portland. ***kim***

"""kim*** , The tram is not meant to be a tourist attraction, but rather to transport people between OHSU (Oregon Health Sciences University) facilities. Regardless, please to ride it if you're ever through Portland again. And pay the full fare. We could use some out of state money to help offset this latest in Portland city government boondoggles.

Beachbum--Good thing you clarified that, lol! My husband had a meeting at OHSU on Wed. and they took the tram. I just don't like driving under it when the tram happens to be directly overhead.

Great fotos Andrew.
The gloom would force me to take more antidepressants than I and my health insurance company could afford.
bb, US politicians are certainly adept at spending other peoples' money.

Thanks for sharing Andrew. I have only been to Portland once and that was last Labor Day weekend when it was very humid and hot. The snow would have been a welcome relief. Still the visit was a lot of fun. Loved Mother's for breakfast and lunch.

Shoot, I wish I'd known the tram was OPERATING TO THE PUBLIC already! Imagine the shots I could have gotten of Portland on Tuesday from up there! I thought they were just running it for testing still...

Of course the tram will become a tourist attraction. At least, the city/OHSU would be stupid not to operate it that way. It's going to get a lot of attention, and with the cost, anything to help defray the cost should be welcomed. Obviously the original purpose, as an OHSU transit system, should be top priority, but I can't believe they can't work something out for tourists. Maybe OHSU patients/staff get on cheaper and first priority, or maybe tourists can ride it evenings and weekends when there aren't as many OHSU people needing it. That would be a nice ride on a beautiful summer night!

Andrew--They said the tram will operate on Saturdays in February for visitors, and I believe for free. I agree that recouping the cost would be great, but as long as it does not inconvenience the people it was intended for. The two trams are named Walt and Jean. Walt was the first African American to graduate from OHSU and Jean was the first woman to graduate from the OSU Engineering Dept. Pretty cool!
