Portland or Seattle?

I'm curious - which is a better place for a single person to settle in?

Sam Nov 6th, 2000 06:19 PM

I'm curious as well. Any opinions?

no opinion on this one? come on, I'm curious as well

Vannesa Nov 10th, 2000 12:46 AM

if you are really curious then seattle is the obvious choice.

What do you want to know? Your question is pretty vague since we know NOTHING about you.

So are there no single people out there who have experienced the pleasure of living in both Portland and Seattle? Aside from some pathetic singles dances, do either of these cities enjoy an active singles scene? Maybe a singles athletics club, dining club or theater club? What would a conservative professional single in their 30's to 40's have to do in these cities for fun? Are the local residents friendly? Is either Portland or Seattle conducive to meeting new friends?

Charmin Nov 10th, 2000 06:34 PM

Both Portland and Seattle are conducive to meeting new friends. I think Portland would like to be friends with Boston and Seattle has told me privately that he would love to be a buddy to Dayton Ohio.

There are a lot of similarities to the two cities, but a lot of differences as well. It depends what you're looking for. I live in Seattle, but have friends in Portland and visit Portland quite a few times during the year. Where are you living now that you want to make the change?

Is Seattle worth the extra cost of living, or would I be happier as a professional settling in Portland? Seems like these two cities are always lumped together as the "Pacific Northwest" and it's tough to get any info on either one as a separate city. Any help would be appreciated.

I understand you can't walk ten yards in either city without tripping over an umemployed dot.com executive officer.

Other than a lot of unemployed ex-dot.com people, are there any helpful tips that people could share with all of us on these two cities?

In Portland there is no sales tax. Big ticket items - washers, dryers, etc. have no sales tax. I don't know about Seattle, but Portland has a lot of beautiful scenery.

I have single friends in Seattle who seem to have a very active social life. If you are into the outdoors, there are many opportunities to meet people to go on hikes, climbs, and camp-outs. In particular, The Mountaineers and the Sierra Club are known for this. Seattle is a bigger city than Portland. If you want a bigger-city feel, I would move to Seattle. If you want more of a small-city feel, move to Portland.
