Portland, OR McMenamins

Has anyone stayed at McMenamins and would you recommend it? Planning a trip soon and want to stay somewhere nice, clean and unique.

After looking more carefully at the website for McMenamins, I realized they have several hotels, so I guess my questions should have been directed at the Kennedy School.

I have never stayed there, but have had meals there. Very busy place with a movie house, as well as a restaurant. I would think the noise might be a problem. It would be unique staying in an ex-classroom, and undoubtedly clean, but Kennedy School is not really central to Portland attractions.

Both the Kennedy School and Edgefield are spotless, fun, good value, and worth the trip. The Kennedy School is maybe 10 min from downtown, the Edgefield, in Troutdale, maybe 20. The Edgefield is very convenient to the airport if that's a consideration.

I agree that the McMenamin properties are fun. I have stayed at both the Kennedy School and the Edgefield, and both were great. Like Gardyloo says, the Kennedy School is not too far away for the great things to do in the downtown core. I was there for a reunion a couple years ago and would definitely stay there again.

We have stayed at the Kennedy School, and while it is definitely unique, I did not really care for it. Every room is probably a bit different, but our room had a lot of older furniture, and just was a bit bland. We stayed there for one night and then moved to the Fifth Avenue Suites. I guess I was looking for a bit more pampering.

The Kennedy School is only about 10 minutes by car to the center of things, but you would definitely need to drive everywhere.

Thanks for the advice. We stayed at the 5th Ave Suites last time in town and loved it, just wanted to try something different. It's only one night so I think we will try it out. For all of you who live in Oregon, you have a beautiful state and we are looking forward to visiting
