I went to college in Portland and am doing my best to get back there; it's a wonderful city. The "Old Port," right on the waterfront, is great to walk around, shop, and eat. Two very good restaurants are Perfettos and Street & Company. The Portland Art Museum is very good; take a ferry out to an island or two in Casco Bay; LL Bean is only 20 minutes away; drive over to Cape Elizabeth to see the beautiful beaches and homes and Portland Head Light. Portland Stage produces great theatre. You are going at a great time of year--enjoy.

Portland has plenty to see and do for a day. IF you have an extra day, drive down to Portsmouth (stop at York Harbor), and visit Strawbery Banke, a wonderful collection of historic homes.

Don't try swimming unless you like your water COLD!

I just moved to Portland last year from Dallas and I love it. Visit the "Old Port" for restaurants and bars. I would suggest Street & Co. or Fore Street for nice restaurants. J's Oyster Bar (great place for a bucket of steamers) is always packed, but looks like a hole the wall sort of place. If your interested in shopping go to Freeport, where there are lots of outlet shops, local Maine shops, and of course LL Bean. I've learned a lot about the city itself by taking a couple of the tours around Casco Bay - they only last about an hour. You should definately go to the Portland Headlight. The scenery here is awesome.

See Portland Headlight, one of the nicest lights around. Portland also has a great park system with great walking trails. The trails and parks interconnect and one of the trails is near the old port.

A few adds for the lists: Hugo's Bistro and Katahdins restaurants. Great food--eclectic interiors. Casco Bay Ferry--a fine outing if you
have a warm sunny day. Enjoy! It's a wonderful
little city! for more info, try
