Portland, ME, for one night

Can anyone recommend a good overight stop in Portland that has charm, character and calm and is not a chain or motel/hotel? Thank you.

Last summer we spent two nights at the Portland Harbor Hotel
portlandharborhotel.com
We found it lovely, the rooms beautiful and it was easy walking distance to many things - it is however, a 'hotel' and not a B& B, but it is the only place we've stayed so I thought I'd mention it.

thank you. i don't mind a not b&b, so long as the hotel feels indigenous to the area, and of good quality. i am weighing portland versus the white barn inn in kennebunkport.

The Inn by the Sea, Cape Elizabeth,
might appeal. It's on a good beach,
quiet, about 15 min.into downtown
Portland. White Barn is a Relais &
Chateaux property, very luxe, upscale,
in Kennebunk, about 40 min.south of Portland. Captain Lord Mansion in
Kennebunkport another option, if in a
more touristed area.

Black Point Inn in Biddeford Pool might also make your shortlist.

Portland Harbor Hotel feels like a chain,an upscale Marriott, tho it is smack dab in town in the shops/boutiques area with easy walking distance to some great restaurants, and the Portland Museum of Art, a gem, with a great collection and an exhibition now on thru Sept 23 on Frederic Church, the 19th cen.painter of huge landscapes. I'd opt for the
peace and quiet of Inn by the Sea on
Crescent Beach instead...
