Portland /McMinnville

We are planning to visit the Evergreen Museum and wineries next month. Where should be stay? Downtown Portland has a lot to offer but seems to be a bit sketchy? We don't mind driving but prefer to stay where there is walkable access to restaurants and bars from the hotel. Hotel recs are appreciated!!

For a one night stay you could stay in a yurt in Champoeg State park. No restaurants within walking distance but it is quite close to the town of Newberg OR. Champoeg is the place where the charter forming the state of Oregon was signed on February 14 1859. Champoeg is pronounced sham-POO-ee. Look in Salem for lodging within walking distance of restaurants. Salem is much less sketchy than any part of Portland.

We stayed A Tuscan Estate in McMinnville. Fantastic stay. Walkable to numerous restaurants (we went during Covid, so many places were still closed). The museum is great (trip report below, too)

McMinnville, located just south of Portland, is a college town which has a lively downtown with art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Rent bikes and ride through the wine country on back roads. Hike on trails at the Rotary Nature Preserve at Tice Park, Miller Woods or Erratic Rock State Natural Area. View Pleasant Creek Falls in the coastal rainforest west of town.

You can look at Travel Portland for lodging options. My kids like to stay at the Inn at Northrup Station. Its close to an area with lots of shops and restaurants. The nice thing is there is free parking. I also like staying at the Marriott Waterfront downtown but really don't know what the area is like these days. The Marriott would be convenient for getting onto 5-S.

In McMinnville I have always wanted to stay at the Vintages but have not stayed there myself. Its a group of old Airstream trailers converted to lodging. There is a pool, fire pits and I think right now there are some harvest specials going on. I think it sounds like fun.
