Portland Maine - scenic short drive north

My girlfriends and I are going to have two days to see Portland, if I wanted to take them on a scenic drive north of portland to see the folliage and maybe look around a nice little town, where would you send me?

It would help if you identified time of year and whether you want to see foliage or seacoast, etc. If you only have 2 days you might just want to poke around the coastal routes of Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough, stopping at the lighthouses, maybe walking on the beach, etc. And for 3 women not to want to go shopping in Freeport is pretty unusual!

I know can you believe it? But they have outlets where they live so no interest. We are coming this weekend and I'd like to know how far north of Portland we'd have to go to see some foliage? And since we'll get plenty of seacoast stuff in portland, I'd rather be inland

NH's White Mountains are only an hour West of Portland but expect heavy traffic. Also, the Fryeburg ME fair is near the Conway NH area and will contribute to traffic. Check out the foliage map on Yankee Magazine's website.

Head up Route 302 through the gorgeous Sebago Lakes area. Cut right at Route 117 up around to 26 South, head through the Poland springs area and down for a stop at Shaker Village. 26 will take you back into Portland eventually. The whole trip will be 75-90 miles probably.
