Portland, Maine for the 4th of July
I'm going with a friend to Portland, Maine over the 4th of July weekend, Thur - Sun. We will have a car so we can get anywhere and know there is a lot to see. Itinerary suggestions are welcome! We thought we go down to Kennebunkport for a day, Freeport and of course spend time in Portland. Is this too much - too little and is there any really great area we should be at on the 4th itself.

Hi there
I think this is more than do-able! One is north of Portland and one is south--both an easy drive-- There are many places to watch the firewoks in Portland-- Consider Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth or the Promendade in Portland.. |
Definitely do-able. K'port is maybe 40 min drive south, Freeport only 15 min north. Itinerary is totally dependent on your preferences and the weather: museums, shopping, history, parks, beach, strawberry picking, farmer's market, kayak/canoe in Scarborough Marsh, head inland to a lake, bike ride, take a harbor cruise or whale watch.

lek53, don't know if you a Hall & Oates fan, but Daryl Hall is performing (with their band) at Discovery Park, Freeport, that Saturday night, the 5th, free LL Bean outdoor concert! I'll be there ... :-d

Camden is my favorite place in Maine and I'd recommend the Hawthorn Inn www.camdenhawthorn.com for the style, decor and fantastic breakfasts.
July 4th there should be lots happening there. Dont miss out on the lobster eaten on open deck near the harbor...and the shopping. In Portland I'd suggest The Percy Inn. |
