Portland, Maine

Hi! We are leaving for Portland, Maine this weekend. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant? (nothing fancy) Also, anything we shouldn't miss seeing? Thanks alot!!!

Perfetta's, Walter's Cafe--both on Market Street. Fore Street on Fore Street; Street & Company. All are in the Olde Port. Jay's Oysters right on the waterfront is a very casual fresh fish place; I haven't been there in several years, but it used to be great. There are lots of good restaurants in Portland; this is just a short list. The Portland Museum of Fine Arts is excellent; if you can get over to Portland Head Lighthouse, it's worth it. It's a great small city; have fun.

On our last trip, last week, we enjoyed DeMillo's a floating restaurant with nice views. You can eat on the deck if you choose. If you like ice cream, Beal's in the old area is #1. Portland is a great little city. Have fun. Oh -for a great "Maine" experience, drive out to the Lobster Shack in the Two Lights area of Cape Elizabeth. The food is ordinary, but the view extraordinary. You eat at a picnic table while the surf pounds the rocks below and the sea gulls soar. Two lighthouses are in view too.

I have to disagree with Sluggo about DeMillo's; admittedly I haven't been there recently because it was so awful when I last was. It wasn't clean, the food was mediocre.

Try Gilbert's Chowder & Seafood right next door to DeMillo's. A lot more authentic and inexpensive!

I also liked J's Oyster Bar and DiMillo's Floating restaurant - they had the best fried haddock sandwich here!
