Portland in the Summer
 

I will have a week in Portland this summer. I'll have a car and am staying downtown. Anything I shouldn't miss while I'm there?

Is this Oregon or Maine?

To Don at NOSPAM: Why would you ask if this is Portland Maine or Oregon? It's under the section of OREGON, so you have to assume the original poster meant, duh, I dunno, OREGON.<BR>What is with these morons?

First of all do a "search" on Portland, OR. on this site.<BR>Lots of good stuff.<BR>Powell's Bookstore is a must even if you don't like books. Great place to buy gifts for people that have special interests;<BR>Saturday Farmer's Market "under" Burnside Bridge--lots of crafts, ethnic food and just stuff.<BR>Drive up the Columbia River-great scenic drive<BR>Good chinese food and great coffee at"Seattle"s Best Coffee"shops!!!<BR>Wish I was there right now~!~!! Just a note to recent arrivals - when you click on a state or country in the search box when you're first posting a message, that only means you're helping people searching for articles about that state to find your message easier. It does NOT mean your message will be restricted to some special sub-forum; it will still go into the big pond with all the other messages. Thus adding something a little specific in the title about which state will help in cases where there are several Portlands or Springfields etc. It doesn't much matter with Chicago or Los Angeles.

If you are into art galleries, and little boutique stores, and junque shops there are a whole bunch in the Pearl District. It is a warehouse area going through urban renwal. You can wander all day out there. On the first thursday of each month the galleries have a lot of their openings. They were even offering shuttle busses for the evening last spring. <BR>There is a really nice chinese garden near where the Saturday market is held.

I'm a life-long resident of Portland (OR) and here are a few area recommendations:<BR><BR>NW 23rd Street (fun shops/restaurants), Rose Garden (by the zoo); Drive up the Columbia Gorge to Multnomah Falls (45 min.); Drive to Cannon Beach (90 min.); Saturday Market - Downtown; Spirit of Portland dinner cruise; Boogie Woogies for dinner/drinks; any of the McMenamins restaurant pubs for dinner/beer; Willamette Vally wine tour. Have fun!

John at yahoo.com: I'm very glad you posted that information. I am new to Fodors for the US. I have used this website strictly for foreign travel in the past, where, if you do select the country you're interested in, you get only messages pertaining to that country. It seems it's different for the US posts. Thanks for clearing that up.<BR>Felicia
