portland hotels

I'm thinking of staying at the Hotel Deluxe in Portland. Would you recommend it and/or are there other hotels comparable? Thanks - We're coming at the end of August.

beachbum Dec 28th, 2006 12:37 PM

My wife and I spent a night at Hotel DeLuxe a couple months ago. Would I recommend it? Yes, absolutely. Are there comparable hotels here in Portland? Probably, but I don't know of any others with a 1940's - 50's Hollywood theme. What kind of hotel are you looking for?

kimamom Dec 28th, 2006 01:04 PM

Hi jansa19 and Happy New Year! We have enjoyed several stays at the Riverplace Hotel, it is now a Larkspur property. This summer we stayed at the Heathman Hotel in downtown Portland that was also very nice. A historic hotel with a great restaurant where we enjoyed dinner and brunch. :)

Next visit to Portland we will most likely stay at the Riverplace again, I love the location by the water. ***kim*** ((*))

Kal Dec 28th, 2006 03:09 PM

Do you consider keeping your teeth in a glass full of water on a nightstand being a location by the water?? :-d

Scarlett Dec 28th, 2006 05:07 PM

Hi jansa,
The Hotel DeLuxe is very nice indeed and not in a bad location at all.
You will be a short walk from the Pearl District and Powells, and the streetcar.
End of August is great! No rain ! lol
Riverplace is the last place I would suggest, ...although in summer the park along the water is nice, but we can do that from the Pearl so you don't have to stay down there to enjoy the waterfront. ( at night I don't think you would want to walk to downtown from the waterfront/or back)
Hotels that are comparable would be the 5th Avenue Suites which will be known as the Monaco soon, same Kimpton Hotel, new decorating ~
www.5thavenuesuites.com
They are located in the heart of downtown, you can get anywhere in minutes by foot or streetcar.
The Heathman, old school, nice hotel.
www.heathmanhotel.com
( some people like to use their points to stay here for free or reduced rates-it is expensive)
The Westin, http://tinyurl.com/m769f
A Starwoods hotel if you want to use points..

the Paramount
www.portlandparamount.com
great hotel, good spot ( across the street from the cinema, Nordstroms and a block from streetcar, near parks and good restaurant ( seafood-SouthPark)
and the Lucia
www.hotellucia.com
very charming, great Thai restaurant downstairs , called Typhoon.
and Vintage Plaza
also a Kimpton hotel, all in town and very nice.

Use this site http://www.travelportland.com/
to keep up with what is happening when in Portland...hope this helps get you started :)

jansa19 Dec 29th, 2006 06:58 AM

thank you all so much. You have been very helpful

happytrailstoyou Dec 29th, 2006 09:23 AM

5th Avenue Suites is a great place to stay in Portland. This Kimpton property is being converted to a Monaco Hotel, and, as a result, rooms are freshly redecorated.

Wherever you stay, check www.travelportland.com for deals that include room, parking, and breakfast.

Scarlett Dec 29th, 2006 09:37 AM

Yes, as I said, 5th Avenue Suites will be a Monaco hotel but the good news is that they are going for the classification of being the only 4 star hotel in Portland.

We have stayed there many times, I might have to stay a night or two and see what the difference is :)

Surfergirl Dec 29th, 2006 12:16 PM

Why would 5th Ave. suites want to remodel their rooms? The room we stayed in last summer was absolutely stunning!

NeoPatrick Dec 29th, 2006 01:29 PM

We stayed at Fifth Avenue Suites and another couple were with us. After we each went to our rooms, they called us on the phone and said they thought their room was simply bizarre in decor. I said ours was really stunning. Then we saw each other's rooms and found they were exactly alike. Not everyone agrees what's stunning and what's bizarre, apparently.

Scarlett Dec 29th, 2006 01:38 PM

They are very nice as they are, in my opinion, but the Monaco Hotels have their own decor. More Modern, less Chintz , they will refurbish with wall papers, carpets, etc. The "Living room" will get new walls floors and furniture.
I think it will all be just newer and maybe even prettier.

kureiff Dec 29th, 2006 01:45 PM

I'm sure the remodelled rooms will be beautiful, but I gotta tell you that I loved the yellow and white striped wallpaper at the 5th Avenue Suites. :)

By the way, I entered one of my er -- paintings -- in their monthly contest when we stayed there. I didn't win. Sigh. . . I must have been runner-up, though. :)

Scarlett Dec 29th, 2006 02:00 PM

"I must have been runner-up, though"
Absolutely..it might even be in the General Managers office :)

yestravel Dec 29th, 2006 02:25 PM

Reviews on Trip Advisor say that there is major construction going on outside the Paramount Hotel. is that still the case? thanks

Scarlett Dec 29th, 2006 03:06 PM

Yes, outside the Paramount is a city block that has been demolished and underground parking with a park on top is going in.
I might suggest it for the end of next August but not in the next few months..

1JAR Dec 29th, 2006 04:20 PM

After reviewing posts on Fodors, my husband and I tried 5th avenue suites this August. We had a room that reaked of dog urine...the refridgerator door handle did not work, stains on the chair seat, and we paid for a room with a river view and looked out on the unoccpied building next door: no river in sight.
We tried to move but the hotel was full..to their credit, Hotel did try to clean urine smell and tried their best to provide customer service. We only stayed one night...
I would consoder staying again ONLY after renovation..and make sure it is not a PET room.
Location cntral, rooms big and concierge helpful.

Scarlett Dec 29th, 2006 04:38 PM

Pet floor is 3rd flloor.
You would not be put on the pet floor unless you were told and they need those rooms for the pets , after you posted this the first time, I spoke to someone at the hotel and they confirmed this.
What might have happened was that someone tried sneaking a dog into the room..
We have spent over a month total in nights at the 5th Avenue Suites and friends and relatives have too, no one has ever had a problem like this.
But by the end of August, the hotel change-over will be finished anyway.

panhandle Dec 30th, 2006 05:21 AM

Thought about bidding 4* on Priceline?
The Benson, Paramount, Westin,Vintage Plaza have all been won on Priceline for between $45-$100 per night. To me Priceline is the way to go in Portland and many other cities.

kimamom Dec 30th, 2006 08:57 AM

1JAR, thanks for the info, that sounds horrible! Next time try the Riverplace or the Heathman, we have been very happy with our stays in both of these hotels. Happy New Year! ***kim*** ((f))

Scarlett Dec 30th, 2006 09:26 AM

jansa, if you or anyone else is interested in Riverplace, be advised that there is a huge amount of construction going on in front ( Naito Pkwy ) and around ( new buildings and apts on the river)..
Riverplace also allows dogs so if anyone worries about that, just ask for a non pet room..
kimamom, you spent a night at the Heathman last year, did you notice if there were dogs there too? I heard that the Heathman allows small dogs..in all rooms..and I know it has been years since you stayed the night at Riverplace, you should put the Inn@Northrup Station on your list too, they have kitchens and are right on the streetcar line, near a couple of restaurants that you might like, Paleys Place and Wildwood.

Fodorite018 Dec 30th, 2006 09:33 AM

Another vote for the 5th Avenue Suites. Even though we live here, we have stayed at this hotel a few times and loved it. Our rooms were very nice, the location is great as you can walk everywhere, and there is a good restaurant in the hotel. It will be fun to see how it is when it becomes the Monaco!

I realize any hotel can have an issue here and there. Heck, there are reviews that say a guest saw earwigs in their Riverplace room, and inadvertently brought some home in their luggage. EEWWW!

I have not stayed at the Riverplace so can't comment on the rooms.

I would much prefer a more central location in town though, IMO.

LoveItaly Dec 30th, 2006 09:49 AM

Earwigs? Ewwww is right mms, I can't stand them. Terrible nasty things.

I would imagine that the 5th Avenue Suites becoming a Monaco Hotel will be wonderful. Everyone sure loves the Monaco Hotel in SF. Personally I love the Kimpton Group of hotels. And I would certainly want to stay in downtown Portland. Enjoy jansa, Portland is a wonderful city!

yestravel Dec 30th, 2006 01:39 PM

Scarlett, thanks for the update on the construction by the Paramount. Also planning a trip the end of August/beginning Sept so sounds like that should be fine if we want to stay there.

NeoPatrick Dec 30th, 2006 01:43 PM

I've stayed at the Riverplace (never again -- didn't like the distance or the noise) and the Fifth Avenue Suites. Loved the Fifth Avenue Suites.

Andrew Dec 30th, 2006 02:08 PM

Just a reminder that the Portland bus mall (5th/6th Avenues downtown) will begin a major renovation beginning in January 2007, to last for 2 years or so. The 5th Avenue Suites is obviously on 5th Avenue; I have no idea what kind of noise/dust this will involve for businesses along 5th Ave but it could be potentially messy at times, just FYI.

Riverplace is definitely removed a bit from the downtown core, but at least now you can hike about two blocks to the Streetcar stop and get up to downtown pretty easily. On the other hand, some people truly might enjoy being on the water there.

Scarlett Dec 30th, 2006 03:32 PM

yestravel, it is really such a nice hotel, and I cannot imagine the construction being anything like it is now.
But ask when the time gets closer and we can let you know. Right behind the hotel, at the end of the block, is where the South Park Blocks begin..Farmers Mkt every Saturday, roses ,park benches, the theatres and where you can see the ballet, concerts or Kodo drummers..it is not far at all from the Heathman which is great for drinks, snacks at the bar, especially after a show.
*that said, we have had horrible times at the Heathman when there is a party or prom-type event going on, people behaving as if they have never been out of the woods before, so it is not always "lovely and quiet" there * :)
For really nice drinks in the evening, Fenouil, Ten01 and in the Summer, outside- bluehour.

yestravel Dec 31st, 2006 07:57 AM

Scarlett, thanks for all the useful info. I will file this away and check back closer to our trip for an update on construction.
