Hi, I live in Portland and am glad you are planning to tag along on this trip. I am not a beach expert but Ferry Beach is very nice (it is just south of Portland in Saco), Two Lights Park in Cape Elizabeth is very nice (also right near Portland). Higgins Beach in South Portland is popular. Portland proper doesn't have a real beach except a tiny one on Portland's East End.
Two nice B&Bs in Portland are the Pomegranate Inn and the Inn at ParkSpring. You would probably enjoy walking around Portland's Old Port, lots of nice shops to buy things or just window shop. We also have great restaurants which would accomodate your baby just fine. Many people like Fore Street and Street and Company (upscale, I personally think they are much too noisy and overrated but others would disagree and the food is very fresh, especially the fish). Another very good Old Port restaurant is Natasha's (fusion cusine). On the quieter side is Back Bay Grille (also upscale but worth every penny) and across the street the less expensive and always yummy Bintliff's. Note that these last two are not in the Old Port which is more touristy but downtown on where the natives eat.
Enjoy your trip to Portland.
