Portland Affordable Accommodations
 

Visiting Portland the first week in June and looking for recommendations for reasonable double occupancy accommodations in an area convenient to transportation and cool restaurants. I am feeling kind of uncertain about which neighborhoods to check out. Thanks so much!

When I'm on a budget, I try to get something near Lloyd center because it's an easy ride downtown on the max. Quality Inn Convention Center is all right.

If you want to be out the door and into the action- Basically anything downtown near hotels like the Monaco and Benson (both amazing, but probably not what you consider reasonable) will be in walking distance to most places you'd want to eat.

Affordable and reasonable could mean anything. What is your actual budget?

The first week of June is Rose Festival week, so anything around Lloyd Center or Convention center, or downtown will be most likely be expensive because they are near or on the Rose Festival Parade Route. The Pearl district, and NW 21st have lots of cool restaurants. You will most likely have to go out further into the suburbs for any reasonably priced hotels.

Hm. Skigal is correct, op. (For some reason I thought the Rose Festival ended the week before, but that's when it begins). The usual suspects show up as available on the booking sites, but then- using quality inn as an example- their own websites don't display results. I ran into this last week in Seattle- don't book on Priceline and its ilk because you could get bumped if there is, in fact, no availibility. I'd call around asap, no matter what you consider affordable, because I'd be a bit surprised if you could find a single room for the full week.

Failing downtown, find a hotel (maybe at the airport) that has easy access to the max. Portland light rail is clean, cheap, and easy to use.

There's also Hawthorne hostel, if you are by yourself and convenience of location is more important than privacy.

Take a look at the McMenamin properties. They are a local chain here, but each one is unique and a lot of fun. Most of the properties have the majority of their rooms with shared baths down the hall, but to be honest, that has never been an issue for us. We have never had to wait, they have always been spotless, etc. There are usually a couple rooms with ensuite, so if you want that, just make sure you check when you reserve. There are several locations within Portland, so it just depends on where you want to be.

As mentioned, rates for all hotels jump during Rose Festival, so I would book something asap.

There are actually 2 HI hostels in Portland. I've stayed in both and I like the one on Glisan west of I-5 a little better.
If you are flying in to PDX just pick one of the cheaper ones with shuttle service near Sandy Blvd.
The entire TriMet system (light rail, bus and trolley) is available for $5/day PP or $2.50/ride.

I would check the Travel Portland website. Many options which usually include parking and breakfast.

Look at The Inn at Northrup Station. It's kind of funky with bright colors but good location and parking included. It is on the trolley line, and many shops and restaurants within walking distance.

The Hotel Deluxe is a very cool, movie-themed hotel in downtown Portland. The rooms are decorated very nice and there is a restaurant on-site also. The lobby is very spacious and we received very personable service during our stay. :)
