About how far in advance should I reserve the car ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria in July? Thanks

The cutoff is 12 hours before sailing but you should check at least 24 hours ahead. https://www.cohoferry.com/Schedule

As soon as you can. Reservations fill up and there can be long waits for other boats.

mms -- thanks! that's what I suspected, but wanted to confirm.

On the Black Ball, we have never had a problem getting tickets within a few days of sailing--even on summer weekends. The Washington State ferry from Anacortes to Sidney, on the other hand, is likely to be fully booked. Plan ahead, but you don't need to book today.
