hey KkkkkkkkkkaL *smiling* I didn't want to rub it in, but I have been back to our favorite isle twice since I last posted. I'll be heading back in September and December. I just can't get enough!

Are you still going in December? (don't ask me to figure out those days you've been counting) *S* Just keep chanting fish tacos, lobster raviolis, and nui nachos....heeeeheeeeeeee

"Coorriina, Corrrrrinaaaa",
You're k-k-k-kKillin' ME!amp;

I just talked to "our" hotel and had her pencil us in for 12-30 so I have now have to re-set the "Kal's Kauai Kountdown Klock" to 200 mo' days.
Will our paths cross in Dec?

Some friends of ours will be coming over after New Year's so instead of going over on the 27th/28th, we extended the arrival date.

I just talked to my Kauai golfing buddy Tuesday. Said the Pono Kai and a few other places along the CocoCoast were getting hit w/ a rash of burglaries and vandalism. He figures some bored hi school kids?

Also told me that a few new restarants opened recently. "Aromas" near Cafe Portofino and another located near Duke's. Hear of them?

He speaks highly of La Playita, so iceeU is safe so far!

Looks like today will be:

We are usually there the first 2/3 weeks of December. We'd love to meet MrandMrsKaL for cocktails. You name the place and we'll be there

I have not tried the new Aromas Restaurant. I did discover the "Blossoming Lotus" in Kapaa. Excellent people watching with fresh, wholesome, organic food - a great way to soothe my (guilt) and body after too much grease and alcohol *hic* at "The Shack" hehehe

Cool!
Drop me a line as the time nears and we can coordinate!

B'Lotus? Down by Wasabi's/Oly Cafe?

Also by one of my fave hole in the wall secret restaurants.
Hint: "L"

I am so upset that these break ins are happening while people are inside their rooms. If this is something that happens a lot on 1st floor units why haven't the hotel installed safes yet? Makes me wonder if they are involved.

Has anyone heard of this happening while not only if someone is inside of the unit but sees the person breaking in? In other words, does this only happens when someone is not in the room being broken in or are the robbers going in even if someone is in sight?

Cellpower - why did you just register today and dredge up an 8 year old post to disparage this condo?

Sounds malicious to me. Editors, please review.

Since this old thread was dredged up, I thought I might reply, as I have some relevant experience. In 2009 my sister's family and I rented a house with a guest cottage in Poipu, on a little road with 5-6 houses that leads to Kukui'ula Harbor. Wonderful house, right on the ocean, we had a fabulous time. Unfortunately, one night, while we were all asleep in the house, someone got in and stole my wallet, an iPod, a couple other things. The really scary thing is that they were in the room where I was asleep and even took a small travel alarm clock off the bed, right next to me (they must have thought it was some electronic equipment). I actually woke up and must have scared them off, because I started wandering around the house, but didn't realize until the morning what had happened. Luckily, the three kids were sleeping in the separate cottage and that was not broken into.

I don't think we were being overly negligent about our safety; we had left some windows open for the ocean breeze -- the intruders had to move some patio furniture under the window and pop out the screen to get in/out. I certainly don't blame the owner of the house, and I think we learned a good lesson. Even though we didn't think our behavior was inviting a break-in, we only left small windows open after that.

We called the police, and they were very helpful, though ultimately not able to do much (not surprising at all and completely understandable). They checked the grounds of the house for my wallet (they were pretty sure it was ditched after the money was taken) as well as the trash cans at the nearby harbor (but they had already been emptied that morning). The owner came over as well with the police and was very apologetic and concerned. She talked to some others in the area and learned that several houses on that road had been broken into over the past couple days. They were all large, ocean-front houses, obviously rented to travelers.

It was a scary experience, realizing that someone had been taking things off the bed while I was sleeping. However, only money/credit cards/ATM cards and some small electronics were taken, all replaceable.

Based on this experience, I will not be inclined to rent a first-floor condo on future trips of this nature. I would definitely rent a house again, but I would be extra cautious about leaving windows open at night, even those that aren't obvious security risks.

And two reminders for all kinds of travel: keep a copy of your credit card information/ATM card information separate from your cards so that you can quickly cancel them (I had my laptop, and luckily that was not stolen); and if you travel with checks, keep them separate from your ATM card. I had stashed a couple checks in my wallet, just in case I needed them, and I had to open a new bank account because the checks were stolen as well. If it had just been the ATM card, they could have issued a new one and I wouldn't have needed to open a new account. Even if you think you're in a place where maid service or similar isn't in your lodging every day, be extra cautious about keeping your financials secure and have the information on all your accounts in a separate location.

I don't think the condos are to blame in these situations, or even necessarily the travelers (it doesn't seem that the original poster was negligent in any way). I think the lesson is: remember to be cautious, but be prepared so that you can quickly recover if something is stolen. Oh, and do call the police.

Even though the reason for topping this old thread might be suspicious, I just wanted to share my experience, in the hopes that it could be useful to others.
