Patrick, I understand your point 100%. I have installed dry wall and have worked in construction and archtitecture. I also live in an old home and know how upper floors are constructed.

You did not understand what I said. An old B&B has a second floor room (usually the top floor), the ceiling of that room either has sheet rock (if it has been remodeled) or more likely a layer of plaster smeared into a thin layer of 1 and 1/2 inch wide (wide, not thick) lath strips which have 1/2 inch gaps between them. above this there are 2X6 or 2X8 rafters which hold up the ceiling material which I have just described. In the attic of many of these old structures there is Not Another Layer of boards, flooring, or sheet rock. All the perv has to do is drill a small hole in the thin layer of ceiling material and put his head between the rafters which are usually about 18 inches apart. If you don't understand what I am explaining just go to an old home, walk up the pull-down stairs and look between the rafters which hold up the ceiling of the room you were just in.

OK, now that I've just booked my first B&B experience, I read this thread. I never thought of peepholes but I'm not surprised.

This reminds me when we had someone drilling peepholes in my parents bathroom wall years ago. The only problem is, he drilled holes in the wall where we hung our towels which blocked the view so the idiot wasn't able to catch his thrills. We only caught it because of all the sawdust sitting on the floor from drilling so many holes.

OK, Jorr, but you're talking about a peephole from an old attic in a single B&B. I let it go until there was another comment about what to use to stuff up peepholes as if it were a common thing. Most were talking about regular hotels or motels here, as if from now on they'd have to check all the walls of every Hampton Inn they stayed in! I'll give in to the one you're describing though.

To be perfectly blunt it doesn't surprise me that someone who invites people to come spend the night in their house (B&B) would be into peeping in on their activities. I've only been to a couple B&B's, but it seems the owners sure were overly interested in asking an awful lot of personal questions that seemed to me were none of their business.

"Patrick, were you on your HS or College debate team?

I've noticed that regardless of the topic, you do hold your own!"

As a matter of fact yes, and also taught and coached a state-winning high school debate team.

Explains a lot, doesn't it?

I am shocked at how many people here know nothing of peepholes. They do exist. When my brother was a cop they had people working that detail and constantly finding them. They are used for all kinds of purposes. They have electronic surveying in almost all dressing rooms also.

I usually check out the storing arrangements and the bathroom, hang some stuff- check where the nearest fire exit is, get all my luggage away from the door and make sure my key works at least one more time. Then I take off and check out the other public rooms in the establishment and also might walk the close surrounding area to see what's right there.

"They have electronic surveying in almost all dressing rooms also."

I guess I'm just Skeptical today. My daughter has worked in retail, five different chain stores, the current one is Diesel, where they sell $250 jeans. She has never heard of electronic surveillance in a dressing room. Isn't that an invasion of privacy?

And if you know this, isn't that tops on your list JJ5 when you checkin?

The employees seldom know about where/what comprises the electronic survey equipment. THEY are the ones that are of most concern in retail actually- more than the customers.

I did a paper on this when I was in school a decade ago. Check out any security or criminal social justice text book. Women security members are used for changing room cameras. There are often small signs posted. Most of this has been going on for more than 20 years, it is not anything new. Read the disclaimers on changing room doors or by the desks where you return goods.

Many of you seem to live in another dimension where security has not been needed. Where I have lived these electronic devices are used in every hallway, room and sometimes there are entire security rooms that operate from higher floors and use ceiling cameras, just as in Vegas.

We also have electronic taggers on any piece of clothing over $15 or $20 that have to be removed with a certain machine. Otherwise most of the merchandise would walk out of the store.

I believe all Sears, KMart, J.C.Penney etc. have such associated services. They are definitely there in the downtown Chicago department stores.

And I tend not to scrutinize, as I am not a perp, plus if you are THAT bothered by that sort of shopping camera set up, you would probably not go anywhere.

I ALWAYS check for peep holes in single floor motels with outside corridors or inside access corridors. And seldom use them at all, only as a last choice of lodging. Those are the ones that have numerous violations. Mostly they are used to keep track of where people are for small time theft etc. It isn't always about peeping Tom activities.

Oh god. You all have me over here crying laughing about the peephole! I can't stop laughing I've never heard of such a thing. Now I'm going to be looking for peepholes when checkin out the room. Thanks for making my day!

After check-in, we normally make sure the t.v works/remote, check out the bathroom, outside view from the room and walk around the hotel. Then we get a bite to eat.

Why thanks Pammer!

Speaking of the Bates Hotel and peep holes....is it true you were the body double for Janet Leigh?

Patrick..."Fiber Optics" has created a "hole" new world!

Richard and I immediately rip the covers off the bed and get down to business. The sight of the two of us "past prime" specimens will immediate nauseate any peepers.

"Offlady" wrote, "This reminds me when we had someone drilling peepholes in my parents bathroom wall years ago."

Egads woman! Why did you have someone do that? Have you no respect for your parents' privacy?

Jorr and Patrick - you both seem to know just a LITTLE too much about these holes and construction methods. That was not one of you at the Accor last week laughing in the room next to Mr. Bucket & me, was it?

HB...think you misread offlady's post. I do not read it as though she personally had the holes drilled. Perhaps you might want to reread offlady's post.

Let me rephrase my comment. I DID NOT read it......it seems to me that offlady's parents had some creep drill a hole......and I sure do not read offlady's post as she had anything to do with it.

OK, maybe I don't find TONS of peepholes. With the exception of rooms in Vegas, which I assume are one giant peephole, I've found two. Both in not-so-great motels. The first one was obvious, it was a gash in the wall, with a tiny hole on the other side, at bed level on the opposite wall. The other time, maybe it was my paranoia, but it was a weird hole and you could see light through when our light was out. I didn't mention this peephole business to start a debate, or imply that I think every place has them. But when I check in someplace, I just look real quick, and that was the topic at hand, what we do after checking in. Call me crazy, I really am used to it!

In truth Kal, I have been the body double in many films. Yes, that was me in "Psycho". And, funny..ever so many "peepers" think they're watching a starlet(with or without the bustier).

BTW~our bathroom remodel commenced with a black and white shot of Janet Leigh in the shower screaming. It was tacked to the wall as the demo began.

And..Hyacinth, I'm thrilled your hormones are in good stead and you can rip those covers off and go at it with Mr. Bucket. It's such a lovely image.

Why in the world would I want someone drilling holes in my parents' home?!? We were kids living in the same household at the time. There were sickos way back then too.
