Patrick,

I didn't know how to ask the "next" question.
Maybe it's just a typo but sfamylou posted and I quote Sometimes after finding a peephole, it's too late, or things are too booked up.
Sometimes???

ROTFLMAO!!!! Patrick..you are so right. But I guess that could happen..my husband has a drill that would put a hole through a few layers of walls.

To answer the original poster..we take our stuff to the room. Then go to the beach with the closest bar and order a few relaxing drinks or go snorkeling.

Good grief, thanks to Fodor's we now all know that the linens, bedspreads/duvet covers, shower curtains, bathtubs, carpet etc are filthy and now we have the added information that hotel rooms have peepholes. I am so thrilled about all this information, LOL!!

I never thought of looking for peepholes, but from now on it will be my first priority upon check in. And if I find one of those 2-way peepholes I will extend my stay, depending of course, on who's on the other side.

A few years ago there was a "60 Minutes" type show that uncovered these hidden little peep holes....sometimes in very upscale hotels.
They interviewed people who would partake in this little disgusting adventure. Just nasty, low life creatures, obviously emplyees of the hotel who would "make"the peepholes unbeknowst to the owners.management.

I've a friend who works at a major chain hotel (not the same chain I currently moonlight at). Shortly after that 60 Minutes story the chain sent inspectors to hotels, who chose 6 rooms at random, and did a complete going over of the room for any privacy intrusions. It included removing all pictures & mirrors, so the surface underneath could be inspected, checking where plumbing comes thru the walls, end even electrical recepticles & plates.

Yes, this type of activity would most likely be by an employee. Many hotels, especially motel-type with corridors on the outside and what appears to be a common wall to the room behind you have a crawl space with plumbing, electric, and hvac runs, and an industrious employee could get an added "perk" to his job. btw- nothing was discovered.

I find this thread interesting in observing who "puts cloths away".

First things we do: check out the room and make sure it's what we expected and everything works, then we head out on foot to explore the property/neighborhood/beach.
(Now, I'll look for peepholes, too. yech!)

Ditto shazz!
We put on a show for the peep hole people!

Hey! I wonder if they are related to the Mole People?

Yikes!!! We may be the people who ruin the bed spreads all across the USA!?!?!?

Usually we check out the room completely and then go out for a walk in the "neighborhood".

For a wonderful illustration of peepholes, I recommend renting the film
"Garden State". It's a feel-good flick with a twist.

I'll think twice about removing my bustier in the room knowing what I do about peep-holes.

Kal~I think I saw you and the divine Mz M in that peep hole section of "Garden State"!! (BTW~you looked FABULOUS!!)

I find my suitcase "spot" in the room, preferably close to the bathroom, and then find spots for the kids, that are NOT in the middle of the floor. Then I open up blinds, turn down AC (it is never cool enough in a hotel room, IMO), and check the facilities. I sometimes rearrange the furniture a little to make "room" for our stuff. Also check to see if enough pillows and then maybe a blanket for naps (oh, how I love a little nap on vacation). I agree with above poster that if you need stuff, gotta call housekeeping right away to get it fixed. Then, look for the ice machine.

Guess I will have to add "looking for peepholes" to my check in check list.

Patrick, I was not kidding, but I did spell that word wrong. I don't know how to spell it!!!! Our room was on the top floor of the B&B. It had an attic above it. the hole was in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling which is a more difficult place to see a small hole. I am sure there was no flooring above the sheet rock which was held up by rafters. The person would only need to make a hole through a small layer of plaster or sheet rock and stick his filthy little head between the rafters above the room's ceiling. There may have been hundreds of people who were watched or filmed through that peep hole.

BTW, I also found a peep hole in our room on a ferry ship going from Greece to Isreal. It was under the sink looking directly to the toilet. Ya gross.

I don't know if it's my "favorite" thing to do, but I HAVE to unpack. It's a compulsion. I have to unpack and make the room look tidy. If we're going to only be at a place for one night, I have to force myself not to put everything in drawers. I hate living out of a suitcase.

Oh Kal, DH and I are not as young as we used to be and I think we now run the risk of being sued by some visually traumatized hole peeper. Perhaps we could hire ourselves out as an antidote to what seems to be a rampant peeping problem!

I always unpack right away, roll a fattie, get a drink and wrestle with my wife.

After that it's all good.

My fearless prediction (wait until TV execs get a hold of this) - Peephole Reality Shows ).

By the way, how do you know it's peephole and not just a little hole in the wall?? (made by some insect, for example)???

My favorite/first thing to do after check-in is drill a peephole and check out the adjoining rooms. If there's nothing interesting I request a different room.

Borealis, The peep hole in England had paint on its edges and into the hole. Insects don't paint. Peep holers do. I am kind of amazed that so many people don't think there are peep holes.

jorr, my question still remains. Most walls I'm aware of have a layer of sheet rock or drywall on each side of a stud wall normally at least 3.5 inches thick -- made of 2X 4s, or aluminum studs. If you drill a little hole -- let's say 1/2 inch across through the wall, and then all the way through the other wall as well --- I would like someone to explain to me, how when you put your eye up to the one hole, you can see all the way through the other hole. It just plain WON'T work.

Get my point? The only way a regular peephole will "work" is if the wall is only one thickness. What wall in what hotel has such walls?

If you don't believe me, try to make a peephole through a regular doublesided wall and I think you'll see just what I mean. Even a peephole in a door that is less than two inches thick has to have a lens built into it so you can see anything. Compound the distance and put space between the two surfaces and seeing through becomes a total impossibility.

Shaz60 and Borealis, you made me LOL!
Thanks, I needed that!

Heavens, I have almost the exact same routine. And it works.
A form of "Nesting" perhaps? Patrick, were you on your HS or College debate team?

I've noticed that regardless of the topic, you do hold your own!
