Pointe Reyes in October

We will be going to the Pointe Reyes area for a wedding in October, 2007. We would like suggestions on where to stay and some possible activities and side trips in the area. We have not visited this area of California, but were in San Francisco and Sausalito at least 25 years ago and loved the Sausalito area. We would be interested in driving along the coast as well. Thanks!

Point Reyes is a wonderful place.
We also love the little town of Elk, which is above Point Reyes, next to the town of Gualala. The ocean views are beautiful and the town is small and quaint. If you even want to go up further, I would recommend going to Avenue of the Giants, where the enormous Redwoods are, and you can even go up to Mendocino.
San Francisco would also be a wonderful destination. I would try to spend a day there if you get the chance.

Hello magerk,
This website should help with lodging:

Just an addenda to the response from egret: Elk is indeed a pretty stop on the coast, but it's a long, long way from Point Reyes - two counties away. It's in Mendocino County and at least a 2 - 3 hour drive up the coast. The town of Mendocino and environs are worth a separate trip.

Point Reyes will keep you very busy if you like hiking, beach walking and birdwatching at all. There is a very good visitors' center to get you oriented. Search Point Reyes in this forum and you will see some recent discussions on favorite beaches and walks. Weather in October, barring an early start to the rainy season, should be perfect for outdoor activities.

Thank you for your responses. The website for lodging should be very helpful.

We stayed at the Blackthorn Inn years ago, shortly after it opened. I would recommend it if it has maintained itself. Check to see if you can find some reviews of it.

We stayed at the Olema Druids Hall in the Olema room about a year ago. Liked the room very much. It is just adjacent to the communal space of the inn but others are rarely there. Susan Hayes Handwovens is located in Point Reyes Station--she has wonderful things.

Have fun.

We also recently stayed at the Olema Druids Hall(in the cottage). It was lovely. The cottage has a full sized kitchen and its own fireplace.

We also stayed at Raven Cottage in Marshall from which we had a peak at Tomales Bay. It was lovely and also has a kitchen. It is less $$ than the Druids Hall.

You will be the only folks on the property besides the owners who have a house several feet away. They are very nice folks!
