Pocono information requested

Will be spending 3 nights at the Fernwood Hotel & Resort in Bushkill the end of July. Visiting my daugher at camp. Can anyone please offer advise on area restaurants, activities, and shopping. Online efforts to gather information have less than successful. Thank you very much.

I did a quick google and saw some really awful reviews of that hotel. We've driven thru the area and it's very pretty and rural. There is an outlet mall in Tannersville that doesn't look too far away. After staying in one so-called Poconos resort (Split Rock) we prefer to stay at a Comfort Inn. The bad reviews of the Fernwood sound just like what we experienced at Split Rock. For a treat, we enjoyed the Powerhouse restaurant in White Haven but it's further west than you might want to go. For lunch we found a little family place in or near Tannersville with reasonable prices and great food. In general we thought restaurant prices were high for what you got. The best deal is getting a sandwich at a WaWa's convenience store/gas station. We also get snacks for the room. I wish we had WaWa's back home. Good luck! Hope someone gives the area a better review but basically, if we didn't have to be there for a conference, we wouldn't visit the area.

Where is the camp? You can do better than Fernwood unless the camp is right nearby.

Shopping @ Tannersville outlets. Close to the outlets there's a brewpub if you like that type of thing. There is a pleasant hike at Bushkill Falls, but you have to pay to enter.
Camelbeach is a nice waterpark - also near Tannersville. Get there when they open to avoid long lines.

thank you for "heads up" on Fernwood. Many hotels are already booked, tried the Comfort Inn and will continue to search. My daugher's camp is in Henryville should that provide an idea of a place to stay. We are not opposed to a B & B is anyone out there has one to suggest. Again, thank you.

I think Blakeslee should be within a 30-45 minute drive. Try the Blakeslee Inn. It's privately owned. Nothing fancy but pleasant and clean. There are a couple of other chain hotels in the area.

I am not familiar with Henryville, although I know where it is. Have you tried the hotels/motels in East Stroudsburg or Stroudsburg?

I didn't mean to turn you off to Fernwood. I just think it is a little isolated. The time share condos are pretty nice but the hotel property looks a little run-down. I do not know how the pool areas are.

Wow, someone else knows the Blakeslee Inn! It might be a bit too far, though. There is a place right at the exit called The Shamrock Inn, you could try there. The outlets in Tannersville are good and they have opened up some great stores recently. There is a restaurant in Stroudsburg called Siamsa - very nice place with great food. I don't really like the food at the brewpub near Camelback. If you do stay at the Blakeslee Inn, or don't mind driving a bit for dinner there are some great restaurants right near there. My favorite would be The Edelweiss. Robert Christiansen is good and the Blakeslee also has a great restaurant.

I second the recommendation for the Edelweiss - great German food, in particular. I used to live in Germany and this was the closest to the real thing that I've found over here.

thank you for your insights and information. We have ended up at the Sterling Inn in South Sterling. We discovered that the weekend we are visiting a NASCAR race is taking place. Consequently the lack of available rooms. Any further ideas are greatfully accepted.

We stayed at the Sterling Inn last year when we went to visit the kids at camp. All I can say is DON'T DO IT!!!! The rooms were absolutely horrible. My husband & I are pretty hardy but we really couldn't take it. After the first night we went looking for the manager to switch rooms and found the head of housekeeping. We tried to be tactful and say, our room doesn't look like the brochure. She said "don't worry about it honey, none of them do!"
The restaurant was okay but this year I think we find a chain in Scranton. It's further but at least we'd know it's clean. We're going to camp in Lake Como if anyone has any better suggestions.

If you go west from the Outlets in Tannersville, you will come to The American Candle store which is a great store. Also, there is a Steak House named Ambers on the left side of the road before you get to Mt. Pocono. Great food and good prices.

As always the first hand information provided is incredible. Thank you hazelnut for recounting your experience. We have moved to another location farther away but with a national chain. Thank you Lorry for the steak house information I love to eat in non-chain/local restaurants when I travel which about 12 days a month.
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU for your information.
