Plug adapter: US to Italy

I notice that Italy, and no other country, has grounded outlets with three round holes in a row. Will this type of receptacle accept a non grounded plug adapter with two round pins such as is used in most of Europe?

Thanks.

This was thoroughly discussed in another travel blog. Just google away and you should find some up to date info.

Be aware that in Italy there can be two different plug types, depending on the age of the electrical circuits and I guess what the electrician had on hand during the install. I don't think I've ever been in an apartment where the plugs were standard throughout. Some are the straightline, 3 prong (which also works with 2 prong) and the recessed, slightly different spacing 2 prong.
