Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz CA
I am looking for a summer getaway and found rentals along the coast of California. One looks perfect for me, but I am not familiar with the area. I am looking for a place where I can plop on the beach for two weeks in June. Is the Santa Cruz/Pleasure Point area a good match?

Pleasure Point is a County Park/beach. Santa Cruz is a major summer vacation destination for northern Californians - lots to see/do and lots of beaches -- but not if you want solitude/a 'get away from it all' vibe.

In the summer Pleasure Point is both laid back and frenetic with visitors. I tend to like the combo. It has a strong neighborhood feel, with lots of surfers. Capitola Village is within (long) walking distance. Various places to eat and have coffee are within walking/biking distance. It's a place you can go, and with a bike, never use your car.
HOWEVER, have you heard of "June Gloom"? We have it. The sun might only peek through between 1pm and 4pm and be foggy otherwise. |
Have you checked the VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owners) site for Santa Cruz rentals? Also www.ahouseinsantacruz.com. There are many beach houses for rent in Santa Cruz of varying price & quality. Santa Cruz is definitely a good place to plop on the beach. The downtown area of Santa Cruz is great with a wonderful bookstore and lots of nice shops. Santa Cruz is geared towards tourism so there is lots to do from watching the elephant seals to renting bikes.

ooh boy. I don't know that I'd call Pleasure Point "driving school". Maybe 38th Ave (and this is where the surf schools usually go). Locals and pros surf a bit west on "first peak" and "sewers". I'd stay away from their waves as a beginner.
