You know, beachbum, I never had grilled cheese bread and it is something I would love!
We had the chowder when we went..once sandwiches and fries..Gower Street ( sister of Portlands Everett Street Bistro) has better chowder :)
imo-because you know someone will come along and contradict me lol

So many restaurant choices...hmmm... now to decide.

Scarlett- every time you went, you had a smoking room... Maybe I should choose a different hotel? Any suggestions?

Golfer26 Apr 3rd, 2008 03:46 PM

Mmm... grilled cheese bread. I like both!! We'll have to go there. I was thinking about the Wayfarer and Grower St. as well.

Can you tell that when I start deciding on a vacation, I spend a lot of time thinking about it?

Scarlett recommended Typhoon and it made my mouth water.....I enjoyed the Portland City Grill on the 30th floor of the Bancorp building offered a nice view and yummy appetizers. I loved the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park~roses of almost every hue imaginable. Enjoy yourself, I am envious...

I've stayed at the Monaco a number of times over the years and have never had a problem getting a non-smoking room. It's a great hotel--you should have no qualms about staying there.

We have enjoyed several places in Portland and I would recommend them all: Fenouil, Ten 01, Olea, Park Kitchen (great for lunch), Carlyle, clarklewis, Paley's Place, Wildwood, Lovely Hula Hands are a few of our favorites. LLH is housed in a lovely restored home, so the ambiance here is very cozy. Harborside, Jake's Crawfish and Newport Bay (floating restaurant) are pretty great, also.

We were just in Cannon Beach a few days ago and enjoyed a nice meal at JP's in downtown Cannon Beach, very good Salmon Cordon Bleu here. Gower ST. Bistro, Bistro, Wayfarer and Newman's @ 988 are also very good. :)

You could also go to Seaside, about 10 minutes away, the Taste of Tuscany is the best Italian food in the area, Norma's Ocean Diner for great seafood in a cozy, casual ambiance, Fultano's for pizza (the place is in a new building now) and the if you like BBQ food, do NOT miss the Riverside BBQ, the outdoor area got hit pretty hard with the storm last winter, they lost all of their trees there but the restaurant survived with minimal damage, we just had some great Pulled Pork sammies there a few days ago, we like take out here for picnics at Ave U. :)

If you want somewhere new with fantastic ambiance, check out the Bridgewater Bistro in Astoria. It is a new venue with some great food and amazing views of the river, very upscale ambiance with fireplaces, a short and scenic 30 minute drive from CB.

Any further questions on dining in the area, feel free to ask! ***kim*** ((f))

Ackkk!!! that was SUCH a typo!! or brain twitch or something!!

No ... every time we have ever stayed at the Monaco we had non-smoking rooms. Never a slight scent of smoke..anywhere...There might even be non smoking floors because there was never any smell in the halls either...
lol..sorry..the hotel is great..I am having early onset senility :D

tenthumbs...I really miss Portland sometimes and not being able to get Thai food really bothers me sometimes lol
Typhoon on Broadway delivers..or you can Take-out..one night it was raining and the dog was with us so we got take-out to the hotel..that was so great.
I really could live in a hotel, you know..I see nothing wrong in it at all. ((F))

Scarlett--you and I must be kindred souls. I, too, see nothing wrong with having someone else launder my towels, clean my bathroom, make my bed, bring me meals.....wow, I'm sounding like a teenager, LOL.

I have alway loved the idea of living in hotels. When I lived in Ca.( after a series of trips) I remember at one point, picking up my home phone and trying to get the operator to give me a wake up call LOL
Our mothers must have read too much of the story of Eloise to us? :)

tenthumbs Apr 4th, 2008 05:02 PM

I suppose the only thing I would really tire of is the decor......LOL

OO Apr 4th, 2008 05:11 PM

You bring your own decor, then it's all fun. I've done it. I loved it. I miss it. It was some kind of fun.

balitrav Apr 4th, 2008 07:35 PM

Kim, we've been to JP's many times, but never seen any salmon dish on the menu - was it a special of the night? We are actually in Cannon Beach right now - I will go check out their menu tomorrow - maybe they have a new menu? Looking forward to seeing what's new at JP's.

Scarlett Apr 5th, 2008 05:43 AM

balitrav.. From what I remember of JPs, it was Chicken Cordon Bleu that was a specialty of the house..but they make a nice seafood chowder..

kimamom Apr 5th, 2008 10:38 AM

Hi, one of the waitresss informed me that is was taken off of the menu but was recently added again by request from frequent diners. Yes, it is on the regular menu now! ***kim*** ((f))

balitrav Apr 5th, 2008 02:42 PM

Kim you beat me to it! I just returned from checking out the menu at JP's and you're right - the salmon cordon bleu is now on the menu. I think that I may just have not noticed it in the past because I rarely order salmon when out to dinner. Living in Portland and having a husband and many family members who fish, we are lucky to have fresh chinook salmon on a pretty regular basis. In fact, my son caught one last week, and my husband brought salmon home last night. Nothing better than fresh chinook salmon on the grill. Just a little lemon and butter brushed on top - yummmmy!

We decided to venture out today and went north to Gearhart. We had a wonderful lunch at A Pacific Way Cafe. If you haven't eaten there, give it a try - the food is always delicious. They're open for both lunch and dinner, but the closer to nicer weather the busier they get, and long lines seem to be the norm. I know they take reservations for dinner, not sure about lunch.
