Definitely do NOT rent a car. Parking in NYC will cost $30+ per day on top of the daily rental car cost. Plus you'll have to fight traffic every day.

Staying at Newark airport area hotel you can take trains into NY Penn station. Please tell us your hotel name for more specific directions.

Really though, If you are considering the option of renting a car it suggests you are willing to pay more than bare bones trip. You really should look into staying IN Manhattan if you are visiting NYC.

Why not do that?

If you can, stay in Manhattan. You'll hate going back and forth all the way to Newark.

Staying at Newark airport to visit NYC is a really bad idea. It's far (at least an hour) and will be costly to commute. If you can cancel/change this, I would. Renting a car is not a good idea either. If you can't afford a NYC hotel, staying at a hotel in Jersey City that's near a PATH train (like a subway) is a good idea if you're flying into Newark airport. There are also some hotels in Secaucus, NJ that have a bus stop nearby with service into Manhattan. This is not as good as the PATH train, but it's still better than staying at Newark.

In Jersey City, the Hyatt, the Courtyard and the Doubletree Club are good hotels near a PATH stop. In Secaucus, there are a lot of options. I think the Courtyard there is one of the best.

The trip from a Newark Airporrt hotel back and forthh to the city is going to be a major pain. If you have the money to pay for renting a car, buying gas, paying tolls and parking - you could take that money (probably $150 a day) and put it toward a hotel in Manhattan.

Won't cost you any more and will save you hours of travel time.

Have a look at travelzoo and hotwire to see what deals they are offering in Manhattan. Double check with the Pod hotel (basic - but fairly new and clean/reliable) which usually has good rates.

You will definitely regret staying in Newark (even if your hotel has a reliable shuttle - which some don't).

Without a car and staying in Newark Airport area you will spend a minimum of 2 hours EACH way just getting to and from NYC and your hotel. Doing it more than once is just NOT worth the aggravation.

As others have told you, take the money your would have spent renting a car and get a (more expensive) hotel that is closer to the city.

Using public transportation to go in & out of the city each day is an OK idea... just not all the way to Newark!

POY, somewhere on your computer keyboard should be a key that says "Caps Lock". Please press it and release it so that your posts are not all capital letters making it hard to read and often interpreted as "shouting".

Regarding all the other responses -- which are good ones -- you were planning on renting a car, paying tolls, buying gas, and paying for parking. That would easily have been well over $100 a day. Don't rent a car. Use that $100 to pay the difference on a hotel, staying in Manhattan and you will have increased the pleasure of your trip immeasurably without spending any extra money!

How will you get from your hotel to the train station? Walk 1 mile each way every day?

We have no suggestion for a $100/night hotel in New York City.

We are suggesting you take the money you would have used to rent a car and ADD it to your hotel budget instead, so look for $200/night rooms.

The area that hotel is in is not someplace you want to be walking the streets coming home from a day and dinner in the city.

Agree - take the $100 of more that you would have spent on the car plus the cost of the airport hotel and try to find a place in Manhattan.

Barring that - look at the hotels in Jersey city that are right on top of the train station - so you won;t be trekking around major highways at night on foot. Not ideal - but much better than staying all the way out at the airport - surrounded by major highways.
