kswl, that is an amazing story, even worse than my husband's! So there you go, not having a passport could mean the nobel prize. You never know. I think everyone should have a passport, and not an expired one.

I suspect we are not the only ones with travel-challenged spouses. I am sure there are wives out there who are travel-challenged and whose spouses suffer through the bad times w/them like this. And I bet your son learned a valuable lesson too.

That is interesting The Weasel. It has been so long since I obtained my SS card I can't remember what I had to provide. Just out of curiosity I am going to check with my daughter regarding her sons replaced sscard etc.

You all will get a kick out of this- it is 2:40, we are supposed to leave to take the husband and son to the airport in 5 min., and I just overheard my husband making a B&amp;B reservation on the phone for Monday night in Ireland. And he is still packing.

I'll be glad to wish them a happy trip as I wave goodbye at the airport...(after I make sure he has the passports and tickets!)

Tell your husband we all hope he has a great trip, emd. You know, sometimes it is almost annoying when the &quot;non-planners&quot; end up having such a fun trip!

But, I should talk---DS and I had an absolutely incredible trip to Japan largely thanks to you and your son. You may not remember last May, when I bought spur-of-the-moment tickets to Japan ($437 rt, I still dream about them) and we left within a week of making reservations. We were actually thinking of going six months to a year later, but . . . From your wonderful, comprehensive reports we did many of the same activities/events and your subway/rail info was so detailed we never got lost.

The Mission of Mercy didn't win the prize that year, Jimmy Carter did (of course!). But we did get invited to all sorts of great parties in honor of the nomination, though. And you're right, they both could have missed out on one of the most significant times of their lives by not having that passport at the ready.

Oh, and I got them off just fine at the airport.

My husband had no seat assignments. SO I called him just now to see how the seating came out, and he didn't ask the agent at the desk about seating, he took whatever they gave him. I think the details just doesn't mater to him as much as it does to some of us here. When I go to Japan I have the seats scoped out on seatguru many months in advance and have them picked out and ready on the very day that seating opens up. People can be so diferent in their travel styles.

Oh, and I am no saint! I am just giving him a break on this one because I am so proud of him actually doing this trip without me. He really wanted me to go. He's a good guy.

emd, see if you can talk people into having the GTG at the Ninja restaurant. It was fun, and whenever I mention it to a Tokyo native (we run into them often in our Go-related travels for Skip) they always laugh appreciatively, ask us how it was, and say they've always wanted to go there!

And we never would have made it to Ghibli without your directions for getting the passes from the JR office in New York. That was the absolute highlight of our trip, we LOVED it. Did you and your son see Howl's Moving Castle when it came out last year? What a great movie!

EMD, i am LOL reading your update! I think your DH and mine must be twins separated at birth. I am soo NOT kidding you; you are describing my 'clark' to a &quot;T&quot;. YIKES!!! So, any updates on your guys? Hope they're having (had?) a great trip.

As for us in sedona - we'd been before but this was by far our best visit, in terms of really falling in love with the area. I'm doing a trip report but want to post it in together, and not in pieces-parts like previous reports :)

Briefly, we stayed at the BW Arroyo Roble (couldn't resist using GC points), ate at Cowboy Club, Enchantment (on their terrace-patio), hiked part of Boynton Canyon, a hike near the airport (name escapes me) and Red Rock State Park (somehow ended up there, but it was nice!), watched the sunset from airport mesa (WOW!), drove to Jerome for a few hours (lunch at Haunted Hamburger), found a cool bookstore and a nearby coffee/smoothie place -- enjoyed the shoppes and pool (with DD :) ) --hmm, i know there's more. It was a highlight of our trip, and we're still dreaming of moving there someday! I also subscribe to arizona highways, love it!

Wouldn't it be fun to have a Fodors G2G in sedona sometime -- maybe girls only? Except DH spotted some intriguing golf courses and it's on his to do return list :)

Hey emd, thinking about sedona and our trip while working today :) - also got in a wonderful run on the Bell Rock trail (i think thats what its called?) Just a wonderful way to see the amazing rocks and work off some extra vacation calories :) Also enjoyed the sunset at Canyon Breeze Cafe with a yummy pizza and smoothie, while the guys also watched a MLB game (big woo LOL) ;)

The bookstore and smoothie place i mentioned earlier is in sedona also, not jerome. Wish i could go back again tonight!

Ellen, my guys had a great trip. They met lots of mr emd's relatives in Ireland (in SLigo area) whom we had never met. My son said he must have seen 1500 shades of green.

But of course there is the ending.

My husband had problems returning the rent car (took an hour and a half) and got to the US AIR counter at 56 min. before flight departure and was not allowed to fly (one hr limit). Shannon's airport is too far from hotels/B&amp;Bs I guess to get to one and back to airport by next morning, so they slept in the terminal (I never would have done this). Except that my son couldn't sleep. Next day they get flight to Philly but would have had a 6 hr layover to get from Philly to DC, so they ran from airport to train station in Philly and got a train to D.C. because son had a high school basketball camp w/team mates in Richmond that he was supposed to be at the day after they were to return, so he was missing first day of camp.

Train was nice idea, except that since it was 100 degrees outside, Amtrak had to go slow and the train didn't get to D.C. til an hour late. And then they cabbed from D.C. to home.

They smelled like dead fish and were so tired, but they showered and then drove to Richmond to get son to camp right away. Son had been up 36 hrs at that point.

I'm glad I stayed home. MAybe some day I will go back w/mr. emd and meet the relatives.

Thanks for the Sedona trip update, sounds great. I am glad you made it to REd Rock State park. If we had a GTG in Sedona, USNR lives there, and amwosu has a condo in Phoenix and goes to Sedona. We'd already have 4 people w/some coordination.

Omigosh emd, your guys' trip sounds a little like the John Candy movie, &quot;Planes Trains and Automobiles&quot;! If you haven't seen it, its good for a rainy day laugh or two! But i'm glad they're back safe and sound. Oh and i hear you; while all's well that ends well, i wouldn't have been too happy either! And yet if we would have been there, it wouldn't have happened in the first place! LOL

Thanks for the sedona link. Looks like we'll be saving a bit longer before we dive in. Definitely worth it, but OUCH. Not alot of choices in the outskirts of town either. The pre-purchase 'shopping' would be great fun however! How close are you getting to a buying?
