Please Critique my Kauai & Big Island Itinerary--Am I CRAZY?

Here's my proposed itinerary:

Kauai:
DAY 1 -- relax, see some beautiful scenery.
DAY 2 - 9 -- see day 1
(hopefully, include Na Pali Coast & Waimea Canyon)

Big Island:
DAY 1 -- (arrive Hilo late afternoon) visit VNP for night time lava flow
DAY 2 -- VNP & Hilo

DAY 3 - 7 -- Staying in Captain Cook area; um, see day 2 - 9 of Kauai.

Am I crazy? Am I going to miss out on great sights that I'll regret not seeing? This just doesn't seem like the kind of vacation where there are specific things that are "must-sees" to be compulsively scheduled.

How much do you pre-schedule for this kind of trip?

Sounds kind of fabulous Just make sure you don't open any guidebooks...you might suddenly find 5,000 things you want to see and spend countless hours trying to squeeze them in. That's the boat I'm in right now! I'm starting to think the only possible way to get in ALL the relaxing and sightseeing you want is to pack up and move to Hawaii.

Sounds perfect to me!

Did you ever pick a place to stay for your time away from the music conference? Have a great time and let us know how things went.

Don't forget head down to Hanalei Bay,hang at the pier and take a walk along the bay, then go for a swim. Gorgeous!

Thanks for your responses. Following the Kauai Music Festival (at the Kauai Beach Resort) I'll be staying at a B&B on the North Shore.

Actually, I've put down the guidebooks. I was finding it overwhelming. When I go to a place like Rome, I have a long list of "must-sees" -- but this time, I'm thinking more "must relax"!

Of course, over the next thirteen days, I'll likely start obsessing!

Songdoc, I think your itinerary sounds WONDERFUL!!!!!!! On Kauai, you'll probably want to go riding around to see some of the wonderful sights, but the great thing about vacations is that you can go when you want to go and relax when you want to relax.

Go snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay at least once while you're staying in the Captain Cook area. Say hello to the fish for me. That's all I'd add.

Just came back from the north shore. It is beautiful. Snorkeling is great at Tunnels beach. Roy's in Poipu is a must for dinner. Try to take a boat out of Hanalei to see the Napili coast.
(it's much closer than Port Allen and you see more of it) Advise you make boat and some dinner reservations prior to leaving. We wanted to go to the beach house in Poipu at sunset and were told reservations for that time of the day need to be made 2-3 weeks in advance. I know most guidebooks are cumbersome, however we found the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook to be a straightforward and very accurate resource. We used it every day and wished we had it prior to going to Kauai.
