Plaza closing its doors, condo anyone?
I haven't stayed here for years but was saddened to hear that the Plaza would soon be a condominium. It is closing its doors sooner than one would think, this April?
Has anyone seen the plans? I imagine it would make sense for a corporation or anyone who had to make numerous trips to the city to buy a condo here. I assume the service will remain. I know someone (well not a friend but an acquaintence) who lived on the top floor of the Sherry Netherland for years. Huge space made just for him. He recently died and I wondered if the apartment would be subdivided (it was a whole floor, the man was holding), or sold. It is too late for me to have one last night at the Plaza. Things change. I don't know all the specifics, but I don't think the plan, at least the public plan, calls for the Plaza to become all condo. The last news piece I read implied that it was becoming a mixed-use facility with condos, retail, and a hotel.
I believe it's being closed for extensive renovations but not sure how long that will take. |
I'm pretty sure it is closing for a little over a year?? I think that they're going to have about 60-80 hotel rooms left and than retail and condos.

It's going to have a much smaller hotel on the 58th street side, but most of the building will be converted to condos.
There was an article in last week's Sunday NYTines (I think it was last week) about how many hotels have converted to condo and how many rooms the city has lost. It's a function of hotels being in good locations, the lack of inventory of apartments and the money to be made on luxury condos. |
I read where the hotel workers union was protesting this conversion. Guess their cries went on deaf ears???

Part condo, part hotel ... new owners trying to hit the hot, hot condo market. Just so long as they do not tear out that excellent Plaza bar .... simply amazing martinis. This is where gin reasserted itself and displaced vodka.

Everything I've read has said the Oak Room will remain intact as well it should. I would think many a condo sale would be on the basis of having the famous bar in your "house". LMF
