planning the flights
My husband and I fwill be flying into Los Angeles from Sydney and after a fourteen hour flight, I think we should stay overnight before we take off to NYC the next day. The cities we plan to visit are NYC, Boston, Buffalo, Washington DC, Memphis, Las Vegas and back to LA for our returm trip to Australia. We do not have to travel in this order but when I looked into airline websites, I have to admit that I am totally confused! For example, to fly from Boston to DC, AA takes us to Miami on a 7 hour flight! Can you well-travelled people please help? Many thanks!!

I do not know if you are set on going to NYC first. If not, I would fly LAX-Washington (no reason you can not do this non-stop - I have no idea why you would stop in Miami for 7 hours en route to Boston from LAX - there are also non-stop flights LAX-BOS).
From Washington, I would take train (Amtrak.com) to NYC and then to Boston. From Boston I would fly to Buffalo (why in the world is that one your list?), and then fly to Memphis, Las Vegas and back to LAX.
Rather than trying airline websites, you could research each leg of the trip on itasoftware.com or kayak.com. These sites give you the lowest fares on each route (except for a few discount airlines).
You can also try expedia, orbitz, or travelocity (all .com) which are on-line travel agents (without useful people, so don't try to call them).

I find kayak.com a great website to use. They show you fare history (whether the prices you're seeing today are higher or lower than they have been), they allow you to pick one airport or any airport in the area etc.
Jet Blue flies between many of these cities. It is included on kayak.com I know. What time of year is the trip? I ask b/c it may affect when you go where.
You can find non stop flights between all these cities if you plan carefully but it seems to double the price.
As Gail said, many people prefer using the Amtrak.com train between NYC, Boston and Washington DC since you go city center to city center. Train may not be cheaper than flying, but many feel it's more convenient.
If you haven't already bought your tickets from Sydney, you should explore whether any of the airlines you'd use have any sort of passes for unlimited travel in the US.
When are you coming?
