I've lived here for 20 years, since I moved here to college at 18, so here's some ideas from a local. But keep in mind that LA is really varied, so where you want to spend time depends on your taste and interests. Personally, I'd skip Hollywood Boulevard btw, it's a complete tourist trap and not very impressive, but really crowded, congested with traffic, and dirty. Anyway, here are some fun places I enjoy spending time, with some ideas for you to check out:

Downtown: Visit the Broad Museum on Grand Avenue for excellent contemporary art. After or before the Broad, check out Disney Concert Hall and then walk through Grand Park to LA City Hall. From there, go to Grand Central Market and take a break for a coffee, lunch, or just to people watch. Next, stroll up and down Broadway and Spring Street for amazing street life, people watching, unique and interesting shopping at independent stores. Work your way northward again, and walk or uber to Little Tokyo and the Arts District for more excellent people watching and to visit independent art galleries, shops, bars, coffee joints, and restaurants.

Mid City: Visit LACMA for LA's most comprehensive collection of art. Across the street, the relatively tiny Contemporary Craft Museum is worth a quick visit. Afterward, head up to Melrose Ave and walk along Melrose between La Brea and Fairfax, stopping into the shops along the way. Plenty of places to get something to eat or drink here too. 3rd Street is a little south of Melrose, and there is great street life, people watching, and shops/bars/restaurants there too, between La Cienega and Fairfax. While you're in the area, visit West Hollywood and walk along Santa Monica Blvd. Beverly Hills is nearby, so if you want to see the fancy designer shops on Rodeo Drive you can do that while you're in Mid City. However, if you live in Barcelona or Madrid (or have been there) then I don't think you'll see anything new on Rodeo Drive, just lots of rich people, tourists, and high end stores like Gucci, Prada, LV, etc. Kind of boring in my view.

Have fun! LA's a great city to visit and live in!
