Planning Elko Trip in October

Just got information on a trip to Elko,NV for $169. for 3 nights including roundtrip flight to Red Lion Inn. Anyone know if this is a nice place? We don't gamble much, just slots, and want to do some sightseeing while there with rental car. Will probably spend time at pool and restaurants, and drive to the mountains. Any info for this area would
be appreciated. Restaurant suggestions, activities, etc.,(if any?) Someone told me it is a Cowboy and Indian town, but don't know what that means. Everyplace has something to do! Any suggestions, and would it be worth our time, anyone? Has to be something to do for 3 nights!
Thanks for any information, as I have never heard of this place, although it sounds nice, and willing to try anything once.

Elko is one desolate, dull town. I've only stopped while driving past. It's about 3 hours from Salt Lake City, 5 hours from Reno and feels like it's farther.
The reason people get those offers is because that's about the only way they can lure people to places like Elko.
It's truly a dead town unless you're comparing it to home in someplace like rural Nebraska.
The offer should be free air and hotel if you'll come spend a couple bucks in our town/casino.

Been there done that a few times. If your not a gambler don't bother going! Even IF you are a gambler as I remember there are only 4 casinos in town.
Agree with TRAVELIS. VERY boring town

There are some interesting canyons not far away - but not nearly interesting enough to warrant three nights in Elko NV. I'd look for someplace better to go for a bargain weekend?

Thanks for this information. I kind of figured there was a reason it was so inexpensive!

I spent 2 nights in Elko on a road trip several years ago and it felt like an eternity. I am one of those people who can find interesting things to do anywhere, but this place was dull.

Dear Mss:

If you have the time I would
take them up on their offer. I see
the same ads in our newspaper every
so often, but never had the time
to go to Elko. For three days you
can get away, gamble a little, read
a good book, listen to the music in
the casino's, have a few drinks with
your dinner etc. After three days my
guess you will also meet some new
people on your trip.
I have had more fun at "off the wall" places then the traditional vacation
destinations. I hate Disneyland, but
had a real fun time in Tijuana with
my teenage children. We really enjoyed
Buffalo Bills Casino years ago and did
not care for MGM. I had a great time
in Cabo San Lucas years ago when it
was a sleepy town but did not care
for Hawaii.
Have fun in Elko.

Mike

While I have never made it to Elko myself, my family often talks about the wonderful Basque restaurants in Elko (which has a strong Basque tradition); the Star restaurant in particular. Expect family style service, just a few menu choices, hearty delicious food, and an interior that takes you back in time. There! Now you have something to look forward to!

they should be paying you $169! Don't go. You can book cheap trips to Vegas for less.

mikefbolen - I like off the wall vacations too, and I can tell you that Elko does not qualify - it's just plain boring. With all the interesting places to go in the country, I think Elko is a waste of time.
