Planning a week in Hilton Head in March

Second time trying to post. Lost my whole post due to a website glitch :/ so here is a far less juicy and more hurried version of my original post...

My husband and I will be spending a week in Hilton Head, SC mid March. Airfare and lodging are booked so its time to make the must- see list.

I would like recommendations for day trips, sights to see, activities, and restaurants. We enjoy history, wildlife, outdoor activities (kayaking, fishing, biking etc) and food of course. I'm also sucker for old trees, views of old farms/plantations, and old buildings.

We plan to take a day trip to Charleston and at least on day trip to Savannah. (We will be renting a car for the whole week)

We are expecting cool and possibly rainy weather in March. Poolside lounging and swimming in the ocean are obviously not on our list for this trip. However walks on the beaches and beautiful views are. If you have favorite beaches I would love to hear about them.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've lived here for 35 years. You'll enjoy the island.

Charleston is a 2 1/2 hour drive. The Middleton Plantation is worth the trip.

You must visit Beaufort for old houses. Also do not miss Griffin Market. The best Italian food this side of NYCity and a million dollar wine collection.

Don't discount March. It could be fine.

Concur witj DRJ-- you might also enjoy:

Edisto Beach State Park--right on the Atlantic for birds and hopefully other wildlife--approximately halfway between HH and Charleston.

There are other planations, so if that's your thing, you're in luck: http://www.10best.com/destinations/s...s/plantations/

In Savannah, the best thing imo is just strolling through the squares a couple of blocks from the river. Lots of old live oaks.

Savannah has a good history museum as well.

Have a great trip

Great suggestions! I can't wait to check them out!

Do you have reccomendations for where to buy groceries? We have a full kitchen in our condo and will be wanting to cook a little bit while we are there.

HHI has 40,000 full time inhabitants. Harris Teeter, Publix both have two stores on the island. Whole Foods is right in the middle of the island. You'll not want for food.

March weather is pleasant for riding bikes on HHI's extensive trails that wind through beautiful trees and nature preserves.

If the weather is reasonable, taking a kayak trip is possible. Paddling back the creeks is a great nature show.

Have been there twice, and really enjoyed HHI.
We really enjoyed our trip over to Daufuskie Island for the day, very laid back place. We rented a golf cart and drove around, nice beaches, pretty much deserted.
Another afternoon we took a boat ride on a red zodiac boat parked at Sea Pines not far from Salty Dog Cafe, shared the trip with another couple and saw lots of sea life.
