Planning a trip on the east coast

My husband and I looking to travel for 4 or 5 nights in the late fall. I'm considering a stop at 2 or 3 different places to keep it interesting. I live in NJ, and would need to drive, but I'm willing to go up to 6 or 7 hours away. I'm accustomed to B&B's, but I may want something more luxurious. Must be places that have some interesting things to do, but not too much. We are trying to avoid the real big cities. Maybe even a night or two at a spa??

I know that this is vague, but any suggestions?

Way vague. Firstly, if you want to stay on the east coast from NJ and not drive further than 6 or 7 hours, that puts you around Boston North or DC/Richmond south. Secondly, to stay on the east coast means I95 (hell). Are you going N or S? Do you want leaves or beach?

The Sagamor at Lake George. That would be about 3-4 hours from NJ.On it's own island. Very beautiful, lodges with fireplaces or stay in the original building, pretty luxurious. They have a web site.

Gurneys Inn in Montauk. Spa, the Hamptons, good food, beautiful.
COme down the Eastern Shore of MD/VA. Cross into Virginia Beach. Maybe stay there one night...or drive 45 min north to Williamsburg. Lovely this time of year. Lots of spas ( Kingsmill is a good one) nice shops. Go over to Gloucester and eat dinner at The Rivers Inn located in York River Yacht Haven. Delightful! Go up route 17 to Fredericksburg. Either stay there or just lunch there. Then on to Charlottesville. Lots to do there. Go on to Leesburg or Middleburg. Quant and fun. Stay at the Red Fox Inn in Middleburg. You get the idea... go home thru D.C. and Anapolis......have a great time!
