Hi Jim,

First off, good for you for making this trip. I have driven from LA to Portland before multiple times(I actually started in Phoenix). It is definitely a long drive but not manageable. Obviously if you are stopping off in San Francisco, that changes things a bit, but otherwise it's just a straight shot up Interstate 5. Save your money and stay at inexpensive hotels. I make this trip fairly frequently, the hotels a long interstate 5, like most other hotels always are doing some kind of promotion. Either way, good luck in whatever you choose. I encourage you to come to Portland, it's an amazing city. The summer months are beautiful and tend to not have as much rain...

If you do decide to include Portland, consider starting there and ending in California, the drop off and or rental charges may be less.
