Jim, if you can make it to here
http://www.prospecthotel.com/ for the night, you can conquer Crater Lake in the Morning. |
thanks for that info

OK I have a plan.See what you think.
arrive around noon 6-19-07 Portland. stay either at house on Willamette River 15 miles south or drive to Hood River.Stay the 20th,21st,22nd.head to Crater Lake on 23rd.Stay 24th,25th, leave early 26th.Head to the coast. Here I'm undecided where to stay. I have seven days to do the coast.Thinking about staying 3 days in Port Orford or Bandon(found a few homes there).I figured I could explore a little north and south of these points.Next was Yachats or Depot Bay for 3 days.Ending back in Portland to fly home.I realize I will not see or do everything but I'll save that for a return trip.Should I see the coast further north? Spend one less day at Crater Lake? I live near the Jersey coast so I can swim and see the ocean anytime I want. What I like about Oregon is the rugged coast line.I'm looking for oceanfront homes with these views. |
Hi jiminpa, I have seen the Jersey shore and the Oregon Coast is nothing like it. It is dramatic and rocky with mountains and wonderful huge trees as well as that winding highway along the edge of the ocean :)
Personally, I don't think you need to go north of Cannon Beach. We will be there this week, looking forward to it and the promise of perhaps a whale sighting .. |
We saw whales (at Gearhart) last weekend!
|
Enrico! I am so glad! We will be at Arch Cape tomorrow, can't wait! :)

If you are staying in Port Orford you might be interested in this place
http://www.wildspring.com/ Its not ocean front though- its up a hill overlooking the ocean. I visited there a few weeks ago and was quite impressed |
Jim,
15 miles south on the Willamette puts you about in Wilsonville, doesn't it? From a tourist's perspective, there's no good reason to stay there, so pick Hood River. Unless you're planning to do some hiking around Crater Lake, I suggest cutting your stay there to two nights, and maybe even just one. I take that back... You probably need the two nights to give yourself better odds on good weather for at least part of your stay there. If rugged coastline is what you're looking for, pick Yachats over Newport. Yachats is better located anyway to most of what you'll want to see and do in the area. Between Port Orford and Bandon, I'd probably pick Port Orford. The beaches around there are unsurpassed in their rugged beauty. And, it's closer to Gold Beach for that jetboat ride up the Rogue. That said, if you're a golfer........ Oft mentioned north coast highlights are Three Capes Scenic Loop, Oswald West State Park, Ecola State Park and the mouth of the Columbia River. All are worth some time, but except for the mouth of the river, you'll see similar scenery on the south and central coast. |
I was reading another thread and they said the Crater Lake rim road had just opened the day before they arrived because of snow. This was in the beginning of July.Since I'm planning to be there in the middle to the end of June is it unlikely that I'll be able to take the rim road.
|
One other thing what kind of temps should I expect on the coast this time of year. I was stayed in Dillon Beach California (just north of San Fran) two years ago around the same time and it was cold and windy. Is it warmer in Gold Beach than in Cannon Beach.
|
True- road may not be open in June
|
Even if the rim road is still closed, you should be able to get up to Rim Village - where the Lodge is - from the south entrance to the park.
Gold Beach and Cannon Beach will have about the same temp at that time of year, but I suspect Gold Beach might feel cooler. I've not been there when it hasn't been windy. |
