Places to stay in Hawaii...Kauai and Big Island

We are looking for places to stay in Kauai and Big Island....prefer to stay on the beach....everything I have looked at are large complexes....would prefer smaller property or hotel....just 2 of us. Would like quiet place with pools....we stayed at Caneel Bay, VI and loved it....so gives you a flavor of what we like
Thanks
Bernie

I'm not familiar with Caneel Bay but I'm very familiar with Kona Village Resort. Separate bungalows for everyone, all the food included along with many amenities. I'm a devoted fan and have done a website about the village: www.davidskvr.net . Take a look and see if it's something you'd like. (I'm going next Friday for my thirty-somethingth visit.)

We've scored some great deals on VRBO.com. A house in Kapaa, for instance, for just $70/night. Much nicer than the $450/night room we got in Poipu at the Sheraton one year. Scour the VRBO website! I would opt for staying in Hanalei in Kauai or Kapaa. On the Big Island, I would stay on the Hilo side, if possible. The Kona side is just way too desolate for my tastes.

Big Island isn't known for it's beaches. They are far and few amidst the lava

There is really nothing like Caneel or the small Caribbean boutique hotels in Hawaii. Kona Village and Hotel Hana Maui come the closest.

That's an expectation you are going to have to shelve for the most part. There are lovely homes for rent that you can equip with maids and cooks and such for added luxury. There are gorgeous condos as well.

Koa Kea on Kauai is being billed as a Boutique Hotel. It is smaller than most and it quite nice.

You can get some nice breach/oceanfront condos and houses on Kauai. I suggest vrbo. On the big island, depending on what you want to do, there are some decent housing but certainly not beachfront.

I have a friend who loves Kona Village and Caneel. While they are not identical, she loves the feel of both. Truly, it depends on what activities you want to participate in and where the activities are located.

We love the Sea Village condos on the Big Island, just below Kona. It is a small place, oceanfront with amazing views, a pool and barbecue facilities in the garden area. Google for Sea Village and you will find many, for rent by owner.

We really loved the Hapuna Beach Prince on the Big Island - very pretty beach and very quiet when we were there.

Doesn't really fit the OP's description, but I really liked the Marriott Waikoloa on the BI. It also had a great beach.

Just returned from Koa Kea on Kauai yesterday.
It certainly fits the "boutique" description and it's directly on my favorite part of Poipu beach. The pool is pretty and there is a good restaurant on the property.
Happy to answer questions.
