In February you should be able to find a place within the park. The hotel is the El Tovar, close to the rim and most expensive. Bright Angel Lodge is also close to the rim. Maswik is about a 10 minute walk the rim. There are other places, as well, in the park. The closest place to stay, outside the park, is Tusayan, AZ, abot 8 miles south of the entrance.

I stayed at the El Tovar and I have to say that although it was very nice and clean the room looked like it belonged in a convent...plain, no frills...this room was on the ground floor in the hallway to the left of the reception area so it faced the front...there are probably other rooms that are decorated nicely though...there's some ambience in the lobby though...the town right outside the park has many chain hotels and restaurants...on my first visit there (about 12 years ago) my children wanted McDonald's fries so we went in and I was surprised by the very high prices there (literally triple the norm)...the person that waited on me explained that because the area is isolated all the prices in town would be higher...then she pointed to the back and told me that they had dorm housing because employees from other towns would stay for days to work and then go home. Also, the restaurant at El Tovar (I stayed there 4 years ago) served okay food, edible, but not great. The only good thing was the table by the window overlooking the canyon at sunset.

the rim proper is(looking at it)the Bright Angel cabins, the BA Lodge, the BA restaurant/Lounge/bar,the Arizona Steakhouse, the Thunderbird, the Kachina, and lastly the El Tovar and ET restaurant....El Tovar is very quaint(rooms) and rustic..and $$$$...the Thunderbird and Kachina is about $115plus tax,the BA is cheaper..only a few cabins have a view the rest sit in the parking lot...I prefer the Thunderbird....there are also 2 other lodgings in the park not on the rim proper...and there is a grocery store.....there is also Tusayan(village) outside the park(about 8 miles) w/hotels,Denney`s and McDonalds,Imax,etc.....I would stay inside the park for ranger talks,sunset,sunrise.etc......don`t miss that ...you won`t believe your eyes.....there is a(guided) tour bus that takes arond the rim for the day...would suggest that(think about $23,can`t remember)....and the helicopter ride on Airstar was great...the middle priced or most $$ one is great....

you better book soon. i just booked a room for mid-march and didn't have much of a choice because almost everything was booked (although I needed a room for family of 4, if it's only 2 of you there may be more rooms available). February may not a little less busy than march. I think same phone number, 303.29.PARKS or 303.297.2757 is for all the mentioned hotels. Check out the website http://www.amfac.com/properties/gran...arkslodges.htm for info on each place.

Thanks for all of the advice you are giving here regarding the canyon. I too am planning a February trip to the GC.
Marj and Paul, thanks for your web addresses as they really came in handy.
It sounds/looks as if I should stay at the Bright Angel "cabin" as it sounds as if it has the best view and I note that it has a private shower.
Is this your #1 choice too? It would be only for one night.
Thanks Fodorites!

you can ask for a view room in the Thunderbird and Kachina...think they are $119 plus tax.....sorry to differ w/daytripper but the Kachina and the Thunderbird are between the Bright Angel and El Tovar right on the rim....ask for a cabin.view if you can get it...otherwise the others dn`t have a view...been there quite a few times and kow this for a fact..try www,the canyon.com too for info....

good decision to choose a bright angel cabin. they were built in the 30's and have stayed the same. designed by architect mary jane coulter, who also designed other buildings along the rim. they are not fancy buildings but blend in with the "camp out" character of grand canyon. you will want to stay 2 nights, it's so beautiful there.

I did alot of research on this as we were planning a trip out but have decided to wait 'til next year but I found that I didn't want to stay at the rim because NONE of the hotels there had air conditioning...Of course we were going in June...I guess it's not an issue in Feb/March. It just sounded too much like roughing it for our family so we were planning to stay at the Grand Hotel in Tusayan which was reasonable and sounded pretty good. Hope this helps
