Here's what I wrote in my post above

the Fitzpatrick Grand Central, the NY Helmsley, the Shelburne Murray Hill are some options that MIGHT be under $300/night. For a 2 night stay, you could try bidding on Priceline. The 2 4* hotels in midtown south are Morgan's and 70 Park, both of which are a short walk to Grand Central.

The Grand Hyatt is on top of Grand Central (literally) and there's currently a special on travelzoo (limited dates) there for $199 plus tax.
