Places to stay around Fordham
My son will be competing in athletics at Fordham during the end of October. Any ideas on places to stay. Hopefully less than 300 per night. We need two nights on a weekend. I am familiar with New York City but not that far up. We will be arriving by train to penn station so any subway directions would also be helpful. We will arrive after dark. Would it be better to take a cab or the subway. Food suggestions would also be helpful, although it usually has to be quick between matches. As always thanks for your help.

I just realized there are several campuses. I don't know where he will be except that there will be a pool. He plays water polo. Hope that helps.

If you're talking the Bronx campus I'm not aware of any hotels near there - and if there were I wouldn't stay in one. (It might rent by the hour or be used to house homeless families).
I would - first - find out where this will take place. Even if the in the Bronx I would stay in Manhattan and subway during the day - OR - rent a car and stay in Westchester. |
From visiting the Fordham website, I discovered that the water polo teams play at the Lombardi Center Pool at the Bronx campus.
http://www.fordham.edu/campus_resour...etic/index.asp Here's a link to hotels that Fordham recommends: http://www.fordham.edu/Discover_Ford...otels_3905.asp Based on that listing, if you will not have a car, you should stay in Manhattan. Here's a link to transport options from Manhattan: http://www.fordham.edu/discover_ford...irections/#sub The train from Grand Central is quicker and more direct than the subway+bus option. Don't know how many you may be, but you might want to spring for a taxi. Just south of the Fordham campus (south of Fordham Road) is the Belmont section of the Bronx. The area along Arthur Avenue is well-known as the Bronx's Little Italy, with shops and restaurants. At this time this area is a more authentic Italian neighborhood than Manhattan's Little Italy. |
If you want to stay in Manhattan near Grand Central, the Fitzpatrick Grand Central, the NY Helmsley, the Shelburne Murray Hill are some options that MIGHT be under $300/night. For a 2 night stay, you could try bidding on Priceline. The 2 4* hotels in midtown south are Morgan's and 70 Park, both of which are a short walk to Grand Central. The other option is to stay on the upper west side either near Lincoln Center if they've got van service from the other campus or further north and use the subway. Not sure which subway station is closest to the Bronx campus though.

poolqueen - my dh is there right now with my stepson - he is in a baseball scouting camp per-say. They are staying at the Sheraton in Timesquare area. It has not been a problem regarding the commute. The school did a good job of having food at the camp for purchase all during the day.
|
talked to dh this morning - he mentioned two things - one is that it took him 1/2 hour to 40 minutes to get to the school in the am.
In the afternoon they took the schools transportation back to their other arts campus about 8 blocks from where they were staying. I asked if he took a subway etc in the am and he did a cab. I imagine the subway might have been faster. |
No - Fordham in the Bronx isn't close to Manhattan and you would expect at least 30 minutes from midtown - even by subway.
|
thanks nytraveler. I have no clue was just making an assumption.
The coach btw, liked stepson... if he gets in there and decides to bite the bullet regarding the $$ it is his first choice. |
And the subway does not stop right by Fordham so you would have to transfer to a bus or walk about half a mile to reach the university.
MetroNorth from Grand Central stops quite close to Fordham. |
then I guess I should not have been asking dh why he did not take the subway. :-) I was trying to get him to get stepson use to the public transit as we live in the burbs in Southern California.
|
From Times Square, Hopstop.com estimated travel time to Fordham University via subway and then walking at 54 minutes.
|
well there you go - he said it took him around 1/2 hour to 40 minutes.

I grew up in that area and would definitely recommend staying in Manhattan and taking MetroNorth from Grand Central to the Rose Hill Campus. Taking the subway could be tricky, and depending on when you're travelling may not be safe - especially if you're not familiar with the area (although the Fordham campus itself is lovely!). Plus, you'll have more food/entertainment options in Manhattan once the competition is over.
If you have some extra time in the area, you might want to visit either the Bronx Botanical Gardens or the Bronx Zoo, both of which are in the area and wonderful destinations. You can definitely get to the Botanical Gardens without a car, but I'm not sure about the zoo. |
Just looked at the recommended hotels on the Fordham site. The Westchester/Yonkers locations are fine, but you'd need a car to get from those locations to the campus (or take a cab, but that could be expensive)
|
We visited the Bronx campus of Fordham on a college visit trip in April and the MetroNorth trains to Grand Central are much closer and more convenient than the subway (we used both). MetroNorth trains going in the other direction would take you on the New Haven line. Unfortunately I can't think of any of the stops near to Fordham that would have a hotel close to the station. Manhattan would also be much more interesting (if more expensive)
There is a van service between the Bronx and Lincoln Center campuses that students use but I am not sure whether visiting parents can also use it. |
vt - dh did use it...

You are getting good information!
I checked the "Metro North" schedule and see that the trains average 17-22 min for the trip from GCS to Fordham. Off peak tix is $10.00 R/T per person. That would be the best bet. There is no good place to stay near Fordham (The fact that the college recommends places in Westchester backs my assessment!) You probably can get a good weekend car rental rate and stay in Westchester for the weekend! Or bite the bullet and try to get a good Priceline rate for Manhattan! Good rec's on Botanical Gardens, Bronx Zoo and great Italian food around Arthur Avenue (about a mile from campus) |
If you took MetroNorth to Fordham on a Saturday or Sunday (you mentioned the weekend), the fare would be only $3.25 each way under the City Ticket special fare.

as always great information. My dh is not a fan of the city but I love it. My goal is to figure this all out and try it when I am in the city the end of this month with my friend. Any recs for hotels near grand central. thanks

Here's what I wrote in my post above
the Fitzpatrick Grand Central, the NY Helmsley, the Shelburne Murray Hill are some options that MIGHT be under $300/night. For a 2 night stay, you could try bidding on Priceline. The 2 4* hotels in midtown south are Morgan's and 70 Park, both of which are a short walk to Grand Central. The Grand Hyatt is on top of Grand Central (literally) and there's currently a special on travelzoo (limited dates) there for $199 plus tax. http://hotels.travelzoo.com/new-york-hotels/432893 |
dh and ss arrived home last night - they loved Forham but NYU even more... now it is up to where he can get in...
