Places to see on I77 from Florida to Cleveland
We plan on traveling I95/I77 from Florida up through Virginia around the end of June (2012). What are some recommendations of places to see that are along that corridor?

Traveling I-77 will bring you up to my neck of the woods, the real Mayberry. Check out Mt. Airy, NC (www.visitmayberry.com). It is a fun little town with a number of options for hiking, shopping, and great places to stay and eat. If you think this would interest you and you have any questions about it, fire away. I love to talk about this part of beautiful North Carolina.
If you love a good milkshake, stop at the Peach Stand off I-77 at the Tega Cay/Fort Mill exit in SC just before you cross over into NC. Pretty darn good and I never travel that route without a stop!

OH, and if you stop at the Peach Stand be sure to get your peaches. they will be in high season.
I guess you'll take 95 to Charleston and then I26 up to Columbia SC to get to I77.
In Columbia you could eat SC BBQ at a Maurice's.
Charlotte is certainly on your way--lots of good museums right downtown. Our new Bechtler is a world class modern art collection. The downtown Mint is wonderful. Museum of the New South. Founders Hall at Bank of America headquarters has incredible frescoes. Lots of good eating/dining.
I 77 won't really take you to Virginia, except for passing through a beautiful short stretch. It does do WVA on the turnpike. Pretty drive.
I wouldn't bother getting off the road for Hilton Head. It's a big housing development "near" the ocean in some places. If you want a beach area, just keep coming to Charleston and go over to Wild Dunes for a visit--closer and prettier.

Here's a few places to stop and rest on I 95 before you reach I 77. When you get to Jacksonville, FL on I 95 get off at Exit 353 C on W Union St. and go about 8 blocks to Pearl and take a left to Jenkin's Quality BBQ which is home owned by the Jenkins' Family for over 50 years. Get off I 95 at Exit 373 and go W to Callahan's BBQ.

If you want the best fresh seafood on your trip get off I 95 at Exit 49 in Darien, GA to the right and go E on Highway 251 to Highway 17. Take a right on Highway 17 and go S for 1.2 miles. Turn right on Broad St. just before crossing the bridge. Go one block and take your first left on Screven St. and have some outstanding fresh seafood at Skipper's Fish Camp. OSD is open for dinner Wednesday/Saturday and Noon to 10 PM on Sunday. They are closed on Monday and Tuesday. This might be the best road food you will have on your trip.

I plus 1 the Mayberry stop and the Peach Stand too. In Mt. Airy, stop at Snappy Lunch.
In Charleston, you could also visit the Yorktown on the Mt. Pleasant side of the harbor. Ft. Moultrie, out on Sullivans is nice as well.

If you are coming to Snappy for a pork chop sandwich, it's closed on Sundays. Check the website for hours on other days

We did that drive in April, driving from Akron to Anna Maria Island and back. This weekend, I just drove 77 down to 81 to N. Carolina.
The drive down 77 is beautiful through Ohio, W. Virginia, Virginia, Carolinas---cheap gas in Virginia--I paid 2.19 yesterday and gas is 2.75 here in Ohio.
I would have loved to have stopped in Savannah but we just drove straight through, staying a night in a motel each way. I would have also been interested in checking out the Lake Norman area--you pass 4 exits for Lake Norman.
We packed a cooler and stopped at some very nice rest areas. Tamarack is good stopping place for us--about 4 hours from Akron. I have never done the craft shop but you see signs for Tamarack forever.
If you like whitewater rafting, there are Whitewater outfitters at Beckley WV. We have used Class 6. WV also has some beautiful state parks. There is one near Beckley and I think you will also pass the exit for Pipestem.
I stopped at a fruit stand in N. Carolina this weekend and picked up peaches---they were great.

In the NC wine country, Raffaldini Vineyards is only a few miles off I-77 and is pretty stunning:

That's a good idea, and maybe even more, would be Shelton Vineyards. They pretty much got the NC wine appellation started. Here is the website, with a map, and since others have suggested going to "Mayberry" (Mt. Airy) it would even sort of be on the way.

The Hampton Inn at Shelton Vineyards is a very nice property. I also recommend some of the Mt. Airy and Pilot Mountain bed and breakfasts for overnighting. I will be glad to make specific suggestions if this interests you. The Harvest Grill at Shelton is quite good. Headed there myself to hear the Tams (they are even older than I am)!
