Depends on the music and the age range you're looking for. Tons of places in the village for jazz, rock, For the more eclectic, CBGB's is still around in the East Village.

The best thing to do is pick up a free copy of the Village Voice or Time-Out NY. They'll have listings of venues.

i agree with the previous poster - the village voice and time out are the best ways to find out about shows that are going on. if you like indie stuff...check out mercury lounge and bowery ballroom..both have websites. also check out www.flavorpill.com..they send out a weekly email listing of cool stuff going on.

"Don't Tell Mama" is one of the best for cabaret shows, on the west side on Restaurant Row.

NY Mag has lots of ideas as well as www.sidewalk.com.

Of course there's always Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, both on line for info and schedule. Also not well known there are performances at Weill Hall, a small auditorium at Carnegie and lots of artists on the way up are there.

Right now at Lincoln Center, you have choices of the Met Opera, Philharmonic and City Ballet.

LOTS of shows on broadway and half price tickets are available at TKTS booths in the city or discounted tickets at www.playbill.com among others.

Have a great time while you are here.

If you want to get out of the touristy areas, try the following where you might find more natives and a more natural vibe:

Guernica: 25 Avenue B between 2nd and 3rd Sts. On saturday nights, go downstairs and the DJ will spin a great mix of Acid Jazz, Soul, HipHop and 70's classics (not the BeeGees crap).

Saphire Lounge: On Eldridge, crossed by Houston. Music is similar to Guernica but the cool thing is there is absolutely no pretention here. Come in, pay your cover, and dance your ass off. The gem of this place is that around 3:30AM, they shut the doors to the world and allow you to rage until 4:30, the latest night of dancing you'll find in the city that never sleeps.

Groove: 125 MacDougal St (in the village). They usually have some decent to great bands on any night of the week with no cover charge. A little crowded though.

Gonzalez y Gonzalez: 625 Broadway. Okay, this one might have a few more tourists but I think you'll have fun. Great Latin bands, hip crowd, and I think their claim to fame is that they have the world's longest bar? I'm usually to drunk to challenge them on that.

Madame X: 94 W. Houston. Around the corner from Gonzalez y Gonzalez (and a few blocks down). This place has a cool vibe. It's all red and loungey. Drinks are a little pricey but hey, you're in New York!

For live music at ticketed events, you can try www.KnittingFactory.com or www.IrvingPlaza.com.

Hope this helps!

Ohmigosh, ladies, we'll need some more information to help you. How old are you? What kind of music? Atmosphere? There are literally THOUSANDS of options in Manhattan alone, and I'm not kidding. Check out Citysearch for some ideas, as well as www.sheckys.com. Steve's suggestions might be appropriate, they might not, depending on what you're looking for.
