Hotel near Sierra Tahoe that isn't the Strawberry Lodge?
Friends of ours have a cabin in Kyburz, CA , but with no room for overnight visitors. We stayed one night at the nearby Strawberry Lodge, which seems to be even worse now --judging from reviews--than when we were there. We don't want to have to drive all the way to South Lake Tahoe when we visit (I am very afraid of that sweeping curve on the mountain road) and would love any and all recommendations for an alternative to SL. Thanks.

You want something that really doesn't exist. The Sierra Inn farther west is is anything worse than Strawberry Lodge. You just don't have the choices if you aren't willing/able to drive over the summit. I'd just suck it up and stay at Strawberry.

OK -- all my friends who have cottages along the American River and up hwy 50 (several) know what the limitations are. If they invite folks up they suck it up and share their space few of the cottages/cabins are large/luxurious and I've never been in one that had two baths. If your friends don't want to share they shouldn't invite you. That is just the reality.
Or, if not accommodating you in the cabin is OK w/ you then you are the ones who have to suck it up - because those two motel lodges are about your only options unless you are willing to drive the Meyers Grade.
In summer you could stay at Camp Sacramento (but need to book months ahead) or the Echo Chalet.
