Hi Pupchick,

Center of Albuquerque is usually considered "Old Town" for travelers.

There is a Traveler's Inn in Santa Fe which is OK, very very basic, and a little run down, but well located and a good price for Santa Fe. I hope someone else sees your thread, because I really don't like staying at this place. It is just a bit too run down for my tastes, and has exterior doors, rather than an inside corridor.

If you are driving in from the east, I would suggest staying in Santa Rosa, New Mexico along I-40. There is a clean, well kept Super 8 right off the highway that offers a good rate, much lower than you would pay in Santa Fe. They serve a simple breakfast: toast, bagles, juice, coffee. And, you are only an hour and a half drive into Santa Fe. You can check out the city's renovations of their Old Route 66 cafes and store fronts, and see the blue hole
when you arrive there. You'll pay about $45 for a double at this Super 8... expect Santa Fe to be higher.

Garrett's Dessert Inn in SF is budget and good location, albeit pretty basic.

Fairfield Inn at Santa Fe is your basic budget place, and conveniently located near a good restaurant called the Blue Corn. However, last time I stayed there was my last time ever at a Fairfield Inn! There is NO insulation between rooms and you can hear everything, including the snoring of the guy in the next room. If you stay there, be sure to bring earplugs. Other than that it is O.K.

You might want to check the rates at El Rey Inn in Santa Fe. It's not right on the Plaza like Garretts Desert Inn, but it's a wonderful place to stay, with a lot of charm and a nice continental breakfast.
