Mary, I asked the same quetion a few weeks ago - under search, type P.J. Clarkes, and you will see they are renovating - no one seems to know until how long though.

I just had lunch across the street from there today. It appears to still be undergoing renovations.

The Third Avenue, NY, location has reopened. Walked by it last night, stopped by, and it still looks as it still looks as though it had been there forever.

I wonder if they will still have the dry ice in the men's urinals! I used to go there frequently years ago when in town on business. They held on to that ramshackle building as skyscrapers went up all around them. You gotta love PJ Clarks...LMF

Just to clear something up before I get some interesting comments, I did not frequent the men's loo, just had a hysterical commentary given me by the bartender there regarding the dry ice, etc. etc.

Had lunch today at P.J.Clark's. Still great. Super blue cheese burger. Lee loved the blueberry pie for dessert. Where else in a decent New York restaurant can you get regular old fashioned pie for dessert?

No dry ice in the urinals, but those ancient gigantic urinals belong in a museum! By the way, the host checked to see if any men were in there, and then ok'd two women to take a peek inside. (Notice the k on the end of that word).

This could also go under the thread about NYC celebrity sitings because I believe that Timothy Hutton is a partner in the new venture.

(If you believe that Timothy Hutton is a celebrity).

IMO, pj clarks is a lot better since the new NYC smoking rules came into affect. It used to be suffacating in there on a winter night.

Hey Patrick, I'm glad you went. I'm looking forward to PJ's even without the dry ice in early June. (That had to be some sort of code violation and/or liability) "Just how did you get your ___ stuck in the gents?" :-) LMF

And now you know the "Rest of the Story". I found this on the Web...

"The answer is a sign of the times. Considering all of the virus and infections in a public washroom, most men prefer/choose not to touch the handle of a flush valve after using a urinal. Hence the urine puddles in the trap. Urine contains salt which begins to seperate from the urine and hardens in the throat of the trap of the urinal. This can and usually causes the throat to reduce in size. When a flushvalve is then flushed, excess water overflows on to the floor or the person using the urinal.

The ice is a short term solution to the problem. As warm urine is past over the ice, it melts the ice. The combo is enough to pass the trap and into the drain.

A properly installed automatic (battery) flushvalve would resolve the problem, but it usually cost more than most business would want to spend.

I have such fond memories of vomiting outside PJ Clarke's, after seeing Jackie Mason come in with a huge group of people trailing after him. I think it was the alcohol, rather than Jackie that upset my stomach.
