Pizza in Kansas City - Recommendations?

I'm visiting KC in a week or so. A couple comments and topics about pizza got me wondering what you recommend in that city. Technically, I'll be in the Plaza area for a conference, but I welcome any recommendations as I sometimes get farther afield.

I am familiar with Minsky's (which I recommend and enjoy from time to time when I'm in KC), but I would like some other options.

Years ago I had an excellent pizza in Overland Park that was made perhaps with provolone, but that location no longer exists as far as I can tell. Haven't seen that kind of pizza since.

Art of Pizza. It was pretty good. The place is very casual so don't expect anything fancy.

You might take a look at CoalVines...it's on The Plaza...a little more upscale. Thursdays are half price wine (bottle) night!

Thanks both of you. Musicfan, that reminds me: I forgot about CoalVines, which I have visited but forgot its name (it doesn't evoke pizza). And it is, frankly, near where I will be staying.

There is also a place in the crossroads that was on Diners Driveins etc.

And to correct my OP, I think the cheese is "provel" and it is a St. Louis style pizza. Apparently there is a Leo's pizza up north that serves it. (I think that was also the name of the location in OP years ago?).

You're welcome! I think the place in the Crossroads is Grinders.

I don't get up north much (live in OP) but yes, provel is a "unique to St. Louis" cheese apparently.

Minsksy's is hands down my favorite KC pizza. Some folks I work with LOVE Waldo Pizza, south of the Plaza.

The St. Louis pizza place that is best known for provel cheese pizza (and square pizza) is Imo's -- not sure they were ever in Overland Park though. I have personally never liked Imo's -- but I have never had one of their pizza's where the crust was actually crispy as advertised.

Imo's appears to have a location not too far north of the plaza and one out in JOCO. I'll need to keep it in mind. Thanks!

Yes--the Imo's in Overland Park is a little far south--around 135th & Quivira.

I think CoalVines has closed. Try PizzaBella in midtown or Spin on Main Street just south of the Plaza. We also like Pizza 51 by UMKC's campus.

Unless CoalVines has closed since March 20 when DD and I ate there after seeing a play at the Missouri Rep it should still be open.

Thanks everyone. Apparently they are feeding us all meals, which may make it hard for me to catch one of these on this trip, but there is always the next one!

oops, sorry for the bad info re: coal vines! I swear when I drove by a few weeks ago it looked like it was papered over. Maybe they were painting it? Sorry for the confusion!

Next time you're in town, give d'Bronx on 39th street a try.

CoalVines on the Plaza is delicious. Also just south of the Plaza on Main Street is Spin Pizza which has great thin crust pizza and fabulous salads with in and outdoor seating.
Question - why pizza in the town that invented Barbeque? For great Q check out Jack Stack right on the Plaza.

IMO' at 135th and Quivera in Overland Park is where they have the square provel cheese St. Louis type Pizza. Quite distant from Plaza, but hey worth it if that is type you like.
