Nice photos, Jason. They make me yearn to be back on Kauai.

jamie99 Nov 26th, 2013 10:29 AM

Beautiful pictures, thanks so much.

hpeabody Nov 26th, 2013 10:41 AM

Lovely Pics. Sure makes me want to go back. I will be there next October :) What camera do you use?

wtm003 Nov 26th, 2013 11:02 AM

Very nice, thank you. I really want to go back.

Songdoc Nov 26th, 2013 11:25 AM

Thanks so much for the nice comments. It's freezing and gray--and snow's on the way here in Nashville. Can't wait to get back to Kauai in mid-January.

The camera's a Nikon Coolpix P510. But the secret is to take hundreds of photos, crop the best ones--and share thirty-five!

dwooddon Nov 27th, 2013 06:19 AM

Jason: I have a different scret. The trick is to use a good DSLR (or two) with very good lenses, take hundreds of photos, crop and process the best ones, and share 35.

The idea of using a Coolpix (or similar camera) shakes me down to the roots of my photographer's soul.

Songdoc Nov 27th, 2013 08:32 AM

dwooddon: I'm not trying to be a professional photographer--or even a "serious" amateur. I just enjoy taking pix. But someday ... I'd like to move up to that next level. Just don't want to carry a case and extra lenses around. I'll leave that to those who are more dedicated ;-).

Tomsd Nov 27th, 2013 02:39 PM

Thanks for the photos - and I am a point and shoot as many as possible also - and edit later - while my wife sometimes takes a long time setting up and then the picture/subject changes. :)

willowjane Nov 27th, 2013 04:03 PM

How beautiful!! On this snowy day the photos brought back wonderful memories.

Shar Dec 13th, 2013 07:00 AM

STOP IT! We will never be able to get a place on Kauai if you keep putting out these fabulous photos! Oh, how I long for March to get here so we can put ourselves into those photos....

Kal Dec 13th, 2013 02:34 PM

It's a #ellhole. Why anyone wants to go there is beyond me. 18 more days until I continue my extensive research into that phenomena ((H))

Tomsd Dec 14th, 2013 03:58 AM

Songdoc: Are you sure those aren't postcards you picked up? :)

Again, great work.

nanabee Dec 14th, 2013 05:07 AM

Wow, really beautiful I especially like the picture of Kealia Beach! But they are all wonderful. :)

Songdoc Dec 28th, 2013 07:00 AM

Thanks so much for the nice comments. Now that the holidays have passed I can hardly wait to get back to Kauai. (Two-and-a-half more weeks!!!) I've heard the whales are back.

Spent last evening looking at Princeville real estate listings and hoping I win the lottery ;-).

My dream: a 2-bedroom unit at Pali ke Kua with primo Bali Hai views .... for a mere $989,000 -- and a $655/month condo assoc. fee. ARRGGHHHH. It's a little small ... but I'd suffer through for those views.

Songdoc Jan 10th, 2014 10:28 AM

Since we talked about photography, I'll share some fun news. I just learned that one of my photos won honorable mention in a national photography contest that had more than 7,000 entries.

I'm FREEZING in Philadelphia at the moment, stuck in a hotel room while the roads are sheets of ice--and counting the minutes until I arrive in Kauai in six more days!!!

msteacher Jan 10th, 2014 11:07 AM

Hooray for you Songdoc! I am currently freezing in NJ and counting the days til our first trip to Kauai in Feb. Your beautiful pics help with the wait!

Kal Jan 12th, 2014 12:02 PM

Don't worry. We are taking good care of it for you and will be out of here the day before you come back.

It has been a bit chilly at night. 60s... brrrrrr. Warmer the past 2 nights tho

Songdoc Jan 12th, 2014 12:43 PM

Kal--Looking forward to hearing about your trip to the hellhole. I hope it wasn't too horrible--and that you didn't get frostbite when it dipped below 70.

Msteacher--Thanks! I was visiting relatives in NJ yesterday. You're going to LOVE Kauai. Feel free to ask any questions.

I'm just back from a glorious walk & swim at Hanalei Bay.

Here's a link to the top-10 winning photos:

I’m completely blown away to be in the top-10 because the other photos are INCREDIBLE. I love photography, but I’m a rank amateur, so I’m really thrilled!

(My photo is the Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk)

rncheryl Jan 18th, 2014 03:47 PM

Jason, what a great link. Thanks for sharing that. Did you do the Bridge Walk?

Songdoc Jan 19th, 2014 10:35 AM

Thanks!
No, I didn't do the bridge walk. It doesn't appeal to me. I don't have a fear of heights, but it just doesn't seem like it would be a lot of fun.

Meanwhile .... I'm whale-watching from my lanai at Orchid Point in Kauai (Princeville)! THAT'S a lot of fun!!!

Tomsd Jan 19th, 2014 05:10 PM

Congrads.

Shar Jan 20th, 2014 10:54 AM

It isn't necessarily the camera you use it is the EYE that the photographer has that is a key to good photographs. You can have the best camera in the world but if you don't SEE it and frame it then is is just average. Enjoy your posts SongDoc. I too love Kauai and will be back for trip # 11 or 12 in March.

Kal Jan 22nd, 2014 08:07 AM

Yeahhhh...What Shar said.

wekewoody Jan 22nd, 2014 03:23 PM

Hmmm...I've never thought of entering a photo contest.

Maybe I should!
