Pittsburgh to Omaha...Travel Advice Needed!
 

My husband and I will be traveling with our three children from Pittsburgh, PA to Omaha Nebraska (for the College World Series). Any advice on places to see or routes to take along the way? We were considering breaking the trip up and spending a night along Lake Michigan. Any suggestions?

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is run by the National Park Service. There are lots of cottages, cute towns, waterparks, sandy beaches, etc. in the area -- you can look up Indiana Dunes for more info. Its kind of low-key but might be just right after a long day in the car.

Indiana Dunes are great. A couple of other ideas, both a bit out of your way....
Holland, MI, great town, windmills, flowers, etc.
Indianapolis, IN the Speedway (sorry no lake) and related museum.
You cold take I-79/70 to apolis and then I-74 to pickup I-80 into Omaha.
OR, take the same route as far Indianapolis and then take US 36 into Springfield, IL and a wonderful Lincoln Museum and then north to 80.

You didn't mention how old your kids are, or what your timetable is, but the Children's Museum in Indianapolis is absolutely wonderful. It's been a number of years since we were there, but it was VERY impressive and fun, even for this mom AND on a Saturday. Typically, someplace like that would get on my nerves after several hours, but I had as much fun as they did, and didn't want to leave.

Thank you for the ideas! I am going to look into them all. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore sounds perfect. I have done a little research, but had trouble finding something lakefront. We would just be staying one night, and a lot of the rentals seem to rent by the week. Anyone know of a nice hotel that is lakefront. Most of the B&B's do not accomodate children (mine are 8, 5, and 3).
